You might consider the tower defense foundation of Plants vs Zombies, removed and replaced with third-person shooter mechanics, a slight against the IP and the genre. And you'd be right to also just assume the whole thing, as is represented in Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, microtransactions included, one giant cash-in.
But it never means that a game can't still be fun, even if you can buy stuff to help you in-game, as long as it's not
required in order to enjoy the experience. This is what Jickle discovered in his review of the game, which he now finds himself heavily drawn back to, even after finishing his in-depth analysis.
