With the upcoming Gears 6 set to make full use of Unreal Engine 5, as part of GDC 2021 developers The Coalition has put together a tech demo running on Xbox Series X hardware. Called "Alpha Point" it's not a game but a look at some of the detail, effects, lighting, and other goodies we can probably expect to see this generation.
Check it out.
The Coalition is no stranger to delivering the goods when it comes to Unreal Engine. Gear 5 ran on Unreal Engine 4, and on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X it still stands as one of the most visually impressive games available today. With this demo created in the still brand-new Unreal Engine 5 it's a glimpse at some of the advanced rendering we should expect, from environment detail to reflections and more.
That more being characters.
With the first clip rendering over 100 million polygons at once, according to The Coalition the eyelashes of the character we see here features a bigger budget (tech-wise) than an entire fully rendered Xbox 360 character.
As of now we have yet to see an Unreal Engine 5 game release on either PC or the next-gen consoles, though The Coalition notes that it's set to power a number of its upcoming projects. Meaning there's more in the oven than the upcoming Gears 6.
