While we saw Mass Effect 3 in hands-off behind-closed-doors form at this year's E3, BioWare were being a bit more friendly at GamesCom, allowing yours truly a taste of combat with some hands-on.

Unfortunately that was the only real new component shown at the event, and even it was locked to a pretty straight-line of play. The team are definitely playing their hand close to their chest.

Still, I did get a taste of some of the tactical changes to gameplay, as well as a brief look at weapon customisation, some story, returning characters and a nice view of the scenery.

Click here for our hands-on feature, and the thumbnails below for a closer look at a batch of new screens.

Ashley and Liara are back? Think my dude romanced Liara in the first one, but then Tali in the second, oops. Kinda pissed that their vids and whatnot so far have shown off Cerberus battles, though perhaps they know what they're doing and the story introduces that right away.

What’s the narrative significance of a fertile female Krogan?

Think it was that the short lived guys biologically nuked the fast breeding Krogans to the point that they could rarely breed.

He's referring to how it will fit in to the narrative of this particular game, not what the significance of it is to the greater Mass Effect Universe.

My speculation having seen the same section of the demo from E3 (although not getting any hands-on time), is that it will form a big part of Shepard's mission of uniting all of the various species against the Reapers so they can lay the smack down in a big coordinated finale. Particularly since when introducing the scene, Casey Hudson specificially said "Shepard is attempting to rescue “someone that holds the key to an alliance between two factions"

From my E3 preview:
Shepard is attempting to rescue “someone that holds the key to an alliance between two factions”, who we later discover is a female Krogan. Those who have played Mass Effect 2 will understand why this is such a big deal and another familiar character, the eccentric doctor Mordin explains that an alliance between the Krogan and the Turian species is vital for the fight against the Reapers.
