One of the great things about the Civilization series has always been the way in which it takes history's great empires, leaders, and historical figures, and present them in a way that is balanced and non-partisan. It adds a sense of fun to what is, when you get down to it, a very serious game. In a recent string of videos introducing some of the leaders and factions in Civilization VI, we're introduced to the likes of Queen Victoria who leads the British, and Theodore Roosevelt who leads the American civilization.

In addition to giving us great animated characterisations of these historical figures, we also get a look at civilization-specific units and traits. Which will no doubt make it a lot harder to choose who to play as on that all important first play-through.

For the Americans, we've got the aforementioned Theodore Roosevelt.

For the tea and scone loving Brits, we've got Queen Victoria.

For the Egyptians, naturally we've got Cleopatra.

And for the Japanese, Hojo Tokimune, one of the grandfathers of Zen Buddhism and Bushido.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, will be released Oct 21 for Windows PC.

I like it, it reminds me of the underrated Civilization Revolution on Xbox 360.

Kind of makes it look like a mobile game to me.

I really would have preferred a more realistic approach. Something that looks akin to Google Earth.

would have been cool, but I expect the more cartoonie feel helps with accessibility.

Think the franchise has lost me now. Wasn't super happy with the state of 5 at release, nor the increasing focus on unchanging leaders and civs with unbalanced real world bonuses, rather than effectively writing your own fictional history as the earlier games felt like (using the leaders as more loose names and appearances, who changed throughout the game's history). Heard bad things about Beyond Earth which makes me think that they misunderstood Alpha Centauri's appeal pretty badly too.

And now the visuals look like ass.

I was really disappointed with Beyond Earth. If they'd simply made an updated Alpha Centauri then I think most people would have been delighted. I've been playing Civilization since the first game was released in 1991, but as much as it pains me to say, I really don't feel the series has been advancing in the right direction lately. I'll give the game a chance to win me over though since I really do want it to work.
