Over the weekend the
Fortninte AO Summer Smash took place at the AO tournament in Melbourne, which put competitive gaming right there in the middle of one of the biggest tennis events of the year. In addition to a charity event, the main draw saw 90-players build and battle for the Fortnite Summer Smash Solos Championship on Margaret Court Arena.
With an impressive $400,000 prize on the table, Brisbane player Leevi 'Breso' Breslin took the top spot winning $100,000 in prize money. The six game tournament was competitive right through to the end, with no clear winner heading into the sixth and final round. With 90-players from 11 countries, a true global event, it was great to see a local player come through for the crowd.
“It’s really exciting. I didn’t think I was going to win, my aim was to not come late so this is great. This tournament has been crazy,” Breso said. Sebastian ‘Looter is FA’ Olle, also from Australia took second place with USA's Reza ‘Symetrical’ Ebrahimi coming in third.
“We are so pleased that Summer Smash proved to be an even bigger success the second time around,” said event organiser Mark Riedy. “Fans and competitors seemed to really enjoy the event as a whole and we look forward to hopefully developing and improving the tournament even further next year."
The Fortnite Summer Smash at the Australian Open 2020 was organised and operated by Tennis Australia in partnership with ESL Australia.
