Backwards compatibility has been a huge part of
Xbox for a number of years now and one of the most recent technical advances is the ability for the next-gen console duo that is the
Xbox Series X and
Xbox Series S to render titles at a faster frame-rate than their original release. Called
FPS Boost, today comes word that five classic
Bethesda titles have been given the frame-rate treatment.
Which are:
- Dishonored: Definitive Edition
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
- Fallout 4
- Fallout 76
- Prey
With all of the above seeing their 30fps performance doubled to up to 60fps -- very cool. For titles like Prey and Fallout 4, or any of the five really, the smoother frame-rate will lead to a more enjoyable play experience. 60fps is kind of a big deal for next-gen and it's not hard to see why.
FPS Boost doesn't require any work on behalf of developers either and is something the Backwards Compatibility Team extensively tests before deploying the update on a per-title basis. As per our in-depth
interview with Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management for Xbox Series X|S it's all part of preserving videogame history and ensuring older titles play as best as they can.
And with Bethesda now a part of the Xbox family, all of the above are playable with FPS Boost via
Xbox Game Pass. These titles all arrived recently as part of a
massive influx of Bethesda goodness. In addition to this the March Platform Update for the next-gen Xbox consoles is adding the option to toggle both FPS Boost and Auto HDR for compatible titles via the "Manage Game" section.
