The PlayStation 5 is set to get a dose of MMO action with the arrival of Final Fantasy XIV Online -- with Square Enix planning to launch an open beta for the next-gen version on April 13, 2021. The FFXIV news doesn't stop there as the fourth major expansion for the game -- Endwalker -- is also on track for an Autumn/Fall 2021 release.
In addition to continuing the story it will increase the level cap, introduce new areas, improve the battle system, and a lot more. As per the announcement:
Endwalker features the climax of the Hydaelyn and Zodiark story, in which Warriors of Light will encounter an even greater calamity than ever before as they travel to the far reaches of Hydaelyn and even to the moon. In addition to bringing the long-running story arc that began with A Realm Reborn to its conclusion, Endwalker will mark a new beginning for the beloved MMO, setting the stage for new adventures that longtime fans and new players can enjoy together.
Journey to Thavnair, the imperial capital of Garlemald, and even the Moon!
As for the PS5 upgrade it will arrive at no extra cost, with the full next-gen version set to become available once the beta ends.
As per the trailer above the next-gen update will improve frame-rates and load times in addition to supporting 4K and crisp new UI. Final Fantasy XIV Online currently boasts 20 million registered players, and as per the announcement of a next-gen update and new expansion Square Enix plans to continue supporting the game for a long time to come.
