As the post holiday lull in new game releases comes to a close, Square-Enix lead the charge with one of 2012's first big-name titles due on shelves this week -- the next addition to their long-running JRPG series with Final Fantasy XIII-2.

As the name suggests, XIII-2 is a direct sequel to 2010's Final Fantasy XIII, once again bucking the franchise's preference for telling an entirely new story with each game.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due on Australian shelves this Thursday for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 but AusGamers reviewer ko-zee-ii has already had plenty of quality time with the finished product and you can find out his thoughts in this detailed critique.

In simplest terms here’s the rub. Lightning disappeared yon three years ago and sits up high in Valhalla never aging and watching out over her sis Serah and the rest of the surviving crew from The Funky Bunch when a Prince wannabe in glorious purple armour sporting a luscious mane of MacGyver-esque hair drops in to take the jam out of her donut and starts smashing up the place quicker than Nick Nolte on a bender.

I think this is the greatest thing i've read in a review ever.

EDIT - Ok should of waited 2 more paragraphs

Landing at Serah’s seaside village Noel puts on his best hero pose, tosses Serah said crossbow of baddassedness, declares he’s from the future, insists she come with him and Doc Brown in their DeLorean to repair all the manifesting time paradoxes, restore the timeline, hit 88 mph, fire up the flux capacitor and make with the family reunion in Valhalla before Caius (the destroyer formally known as Prince) annihilates, like, the entire space-time continuum. Yep. That’s in simplest terms. I tried to warn you.

Hahaha nice review, I laffed.

The only way FF will ever break the mould and come into it's own as a modern day RPG is with the team behind FF12, plain and simple. That game rocked, and was imo the direction the franchise should've gone.

Only problem I had with FF12 was that you could abuse the f*** out of the AI system. I set my game up to cast haste on a monster that summoned other monsters. I would heal myself when needed and only target the summoned mobs. The game played itself and I left it overnight, coming back to a max level character.

Yeah it had some issues, but I loved the gambit system. With some work on that and the open world approach it would s*** on any of their* recent work.

You know what I hated about 13?

Nothing. It was the first final fantasy that was single player I haven't played at all (let alone finished like 10x over) and therefore I've got nothing but praise to say.

Bravo Square, you killed my interest in JRPGs. Thank you. Thank you so much.

Been playing FFXIII-2 most of the day and the game is amazing, especially after how disappointed I was with FFXIII.

Gameplay outside of combat has taken a complete 180. Actual towns with plenty of NPC chatter, numerous side quests and activities, and fairly non linear progression. Combat wise nothing's really changed, just improved. The only thing I actually liked about FFXIII was the combat, now it feels and plays more streamlined. Yet to really get into the monster capturing side of it yet.

I guess it's a little hypocritical for me to say I'm not really fussed too much about the story when I'm talking about a rpg. After all FFVIII is my favourite from the series and its story is a convoluted mess. Either way this game really is a big suprise after experiencing FFXIII. I'm really looking forward to Versus XIII, hopefully this is a sign that will turn out as amazing as it's looking.

But honestly I just want a remake/sequel to FFVIII :\

Monster Capturing is back? Hows that work? Trap it so you can fight it in an arena like in FFX?
