Fallout 76 is now officially out in the wild, with Reclamation Day celebrations happening across PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Although playable in beta form for the past several weeks, due to the weird ANZ times (I'm not a morning person) and short bursts - like everyone else out there reviewers had to wait until launch to really dive into the new multiplayer Fallout experience.
With that in mind we're definitely going to be reviewing the game, but won't be sharing anything other than impressions both positive and constructive until we've felt that we've seen enough to truly form an opinion. I'll be taking on review duties on this one, and although it marks my first review of a Bethesda Fallout game - it's a series that I adore.
Although I've spent quite a bit of time in post-apocalyptic West Virginia these past few days with the full retail release of Fallout 76, my original
hands-on impressions from an early preview build still rings true. In that the star of the show is the detailed and expansive open-world featured in Fallout 76. Are there any downsides? Sure. Performance, even on the Xbox One X, still needs to be improved significantly. And HDR implementation, without the ability to adjust and fine tune brightness, means a sky with unrealistic contrast and colour banding.
As for the game itself? Well, No NPCs still feels somewhat weird and not all that justifiable. But being able to simply explore, setup-camp, and discover new strange sites with others - like a band of Super Mutants living in shacks on top of a mountain - is incredibly rewarding. And still somehow manages to retain the isolated feel that the series is known for.
More detailed impressions and thoughts soon, with a review to follow! In the meantime if you have any burning Fallout 76 questions, drop us a line.
