We've been waiting for it, and now Bethesda Game Studios has finally dropped the Fallout 4 bombshell.
Call me kooky, but none of the imagery in this trailer looks built off the same engine as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim -- rather, it looks almost id Tech 5. Still, there's plenty to take away from the debut trailer for the game, which features more colour than Fallout 3, suggesting some of the pizzaz of New Vegas has made its way into the design stylings of this newest Fallout adventure, while the promise of airships and more look very tantalising.
Me, however, I'm just stoked I can get my K9 companion back once I emerge from Vault 111.
I don't care what engine it's using, all I know is that it looks damn good to me. I really like the variety in landscape that this one is apparently going to have. I'm guessing we'll be getting this next year, although I'd love it if it was sooner.
Christ those graphics look awful, like a cinematic from twinsen's odyssey. And I play and love mount & blade, but jesus, that's a strange move for a major studio in 2015.
I dunno, it still might be running on the Creation engine that they used for Skyrim. Its still a good step up from FO3 and NV visually though. Things seem a bit less janky.
Compare the two thumbnails on the Ausgamers front page right now, the first talking about the countdown to trailer release, the second announcing the release. TBH, the fallout 3 thumbnail looks better...
I'm hoping the 'plainness' of the F4 trailer is just due to the game not being finished yet.
Graphics being 10 years old aside, I am definitely excited for this game!
Have to say was pretty disappointed with that, more of the same (as Fallout 3) and the graphics look terrible, honestly worse than Fallout 3 and way worse than the current triple A games.
Sure it'll be a great game if it's like Fallout 3, but pretty surprising for 2015 and the next installment.
Yeah it's solidified my conspiracy theory that somebody important inside the company is the main animator or something, and just isn't at a competitive skill level, but they can't just replace them. I've had this theory running since Oblivion, but now it's really showing worse than ever before, it almost looks like they've gone backwards from Skyrim.
The environments look great, but yeah the character models look kinda dated and s***, especially in the pre-war flashback bits. And they still have that trademark Bethesda animation style where its floaty and stiff has no real sense of weight to it. I'm sure I'll still play the absolute s*** out of it though.
If you're playing a Bethesda game for the graphics you're doing it wrong, and I for one am glad they're (probably/possibly) sticking with a known engine - it'd going to make modding easier, and we all know that Bethesda games only go from "sandbox to run around in" to "amazing" with mods.
I don't think its fair to really blame it all on the engine, Skyrim was a pretty decent update to the engine, buts its like Midda said in the other thread and Nerf in this one, it seems to be more the calibre or the skills of their artists and their animators that let them down. The non-human stuff seems to have less problems than the human stuff. Like the dragons in Skyrim I thought were pretty awesome, and the dwemer robots and giants and stuff looked pretty cool, but the human/nord/elf type characters not so much.

I think you forget what fallout 3 was like if you think that looks worse.
The big thing I took away from that trailer that no one has mentioned is what looks like a voiced player character instead of the mute husk we normally get from Bethesda.
Looks Bethesda-ish. I'm sure it will be enjoyed as much as Fallout 3, but it would have been nice to see them try to actually make it hold up visually. It's not like Bethesda are a struggling studio with no resources.
Someone sure did put a lot of work into that, but its pretty fake. Even aside from the fake sounding game stuff who honestly goes ahead and breaks an NDA and opens themselves up to litigation then goes "Oh my username is my real name, go ask Bethesda about me". Just someone looking for their 5 minutes of internet fame.
A lot of it just sounds fake though, especially the bit about making PS3/XBox 360 versions, games that are coming out right now aren't bothering with PS3/360 versions anymore let alone games a year from now. And then she says its currently 40% complete but coming out in October? Yeah, nah.
Edit: Oh, never mind, its some old thing from 11 months ago
lulz, people saying it looks worse than fo3 need to give me some of their drugs right now.
tbh im not fussed about the engine, modderss always fix beth's broken s*** and make the game 10x better anyway.
It does look better than Fallout 3, however by better I mean specifically only that it looks like its running at a higher resolution with higher resolution textures. It doesn't look a picturesque as more recent games. You can't really blame people for expecting the same kind of graphical fidelity that is in the Witcher 3 or Dragon Age... 2 recent games where every scene looks like a post card. Even the waste land in the upcoming mad max game looks more picturesque then what's been shown in Fallout 4.
Further more...
When people start expecting games from a developer to be riddle with s*** animations, funky bugs and poorly designed elements that will need to be fixed by third party mods.. well then that developer needs to f*****g check themselves out of the game until they are ready to deliver something worth being proud of.
i rekn the models look great in elder scrolls online.. so someone at bethesda is capable of it! the facial expressions are still bad but the rest of the model movement seems fairly life like to me.

Whilst I agree for the most part, Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3, F:NV and Skyrim all disagree.

Ignoring F:NV which was developed by someone else, all of those games are really only impressive due to the sheer size of the world, a lot of the flaws can be forgiven and over looked. Some great quest and dialogue made the worlds feel alive, we didn't have much else to compete with on the scale that these games offered so they earned there respective praises.
A lot of other developers are coming to the table now with open world games that aren't riddle with bugs and s*** animations, given the competition, Bethesda can't keep brining out games with the same flaws, they will earn a reputation for the wrong reasons.
Despite all this, I will buy the game, its fallout and I'm a huge fan of the series (even thought the best fallout games had nothing todo with them). Bethesda could also s*** on toast, push it into my face, call it a new ES game and ill eat it up like the chump I am... why.. because I'm so use to eating there s***, I now think it taste good.
I'm wondering if this will be the game that will have "paid for" mods. I believe Skyrim was a test, but as it already had a huge mod ecosystem it didn't sit well.
I'm almost 100% certain that this will come with paid mod support from day 1. Or, I dunno, I'll eat my sock.
My point is groganus, why bother checking yourself and making sure your game is sound? It will still sell like hotcakes just like every f*****g one before it. It's s***, but don't tell me you actually think dev's will take that approach when their s*** is flying off the shelves regardless.
Edit* - heh, read the last line of your post. sums it up really :P
I couldn't play fallout 3 mainly because of the revolting graphics. This looks acceptable by today's standards. Still, I feel guilty about giving this company a cent of my money. I'll get it on special xD $5 suckie suckie.
I get the points, still pretty unimpressed for 2015 and the next instalment in the franchise. Sure I'll still play it and love it, just feels like a few years behind the curve, and it's not even out yet!
looks awesome. graphics aren't everything, as long as it's playable and has good story. i agreed with the earlier AG article that the biggest fun is in the exploration.
Can't wait for the cool mods and re-textures people will make. Also that trailer could have been made with a console. Since that will be the lowest common denominator.
Viper, I think it's a bit rich trying to judge how good a game is going to look compared to another off a few scenes, give it time. imo those shots under the bridge where it seemed like player pov looked the best. the lighting looks like it's improved vastly.
Yeah, its like grog was saying though, theres some real top quality open world RPGs showing up now from companies that aren't Bethesda. In the past I guess they were mostly just competing with themselves so each game was an incremental improvement and that was good enough. Now the bar has been raised a lot higher by stuff like Witcher 3 and DA:I so when Bethesda just incrementally improve on the last title it now ends up leaving them a lot furthur behind the curve than with previous iterations.
I'm sure it'll still be great fun and I'll still play it heaps, but they're gonna get left behind if they aren't careful.
Yeah fair play, I did watch it in full screen on a 24" too. Defo looks a lot better not in full screen!
Haha @ravnos, yeah I think maybe the joy at getting another Fallout game is perhaps blinkering us to how s*** the graphics looked! ;) And don't get me wrong, super stoked to have another Fallout game, I was just kind of expecting it to be in-line or ahead of other triple A games. Maybe partially because the jump from F2 to F3 was so monumental, and at the time of F3 those graphics were pretty decent, plus just wanting a revolutionary new F4. I agree with grog too, buggy/needing mods shouldn't be a legit expectation.
Looks a bit better now. Definitely improved over FO3 and NV when it comes to models and Textures. They might might improve the textures for PC with a High Res texture pack like they did for Skyrim.
F3 had over 30 songs, but I reckon whoever implemented the rotation on the radio to balance them all screwed it up because it always felt like less. Especially when you compare it to games like GTA Vice City and later that would have 80-100+ songs. Three Dog broke it up a little I s'pose.
It was around the same number in FNV but yet it always seemed to be a Marty Robbins, Dean Martin or Sinatra earworm:
♫ to the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day... ♫ hardly spoke to folks around him didn't have too much to say... ♫
The graphics only need to be good by current standards, not gpu melting next gen after this one need 4 titans to run it. It's a new Fallout game for f**** sake be happy. Like others have said there will likely be hi res mods etc. Unless your a consoler then that's your choice and it will probably look passable anyway.
What's with the cartoony graphics for a post apocalyptic future? I don't like the art direction, and it certainly looks more of the same with a bit bigger cities.

Did you watch it full screen? It looks far worse when you do, where you can see all the low quality stretching of the dog mesh etc.
Oddly, Lionhead's Black & White 2 came out 10 years ago (was likely in development before that), and had fur which morphed, grew, got wet, etc.
