With the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham approaching, we've got word esports are going to be included in a sort of test-bed setting. The first Commonwealth Esports Championships will be held over two days but will be separate to main event. In that it will feature its own medals and governing body, but the hope is that it'll become a full part of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

"Esports is continuing to grow dramatically in terms of popularity and participation, particularly amongst young people, and we are continuing to look at ways to explore how it can align with the Commonwealth Sports Movement," said Commonwealth Games Federation president Dame Louise Martin. "This will allow us to review the long-term relationship between the Commonwealth Games and esports as we continue to evolve and explore future editions of our event and what they could look like."

No word on what games will be included, though you'd have to assume that League of Legends and CS:GO are being considered. For Aussies the Commonwealth Games is an institution so no doubt seeing esports in the mix will spark a debate on whether or not esports are, you know, sport. A somewhat tired debate, but something we'll have to endure for what is otherwise pretty exciting news.
