The lack of an in-game auction house for trading in Bethesda's recently launched MMO The Elder Scrolls Online has led enterprising players to establish their own trading forums, inviting other players to buy and sell their goods and services like a traditional classified platform.
Recognising this natural desire for wider trading than the game's guild store system can provide, the developers at Zenimax Online appear to have officially endorsed one such third party forum, linking to
tesoelite.com on the game's official Twitter feed. (thanks

Polygon notes that The Elder Scrolls Online developers have previously explained the absense of a usual MMO auction house as an intentional omission:
"You don't necessarily want to do a global auction house for a game with one giant server because that generally leads to all the best gear being available at very, very cheap prices," gameplay designer Nick Konkle told Shoddy Cast. "A lot of times that can trivialize the game. You cannot have a healthy economy when there are no restrictions on getting the best stuff in the game."
The Elder Scrolls Online launched on April 4th 2014 for PC and Mac, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One offerings currently slated for June.

I use to like the way trading was done and promoted in UO, i had relationships with people who regularly sold materials and there was even conspiracies of certain traders getting together to control the prices of stuff. In my older age i'm a cynical anti-social gamer who doesn't want my chat feed spammed.

you sure do! :p i just minimise the chat window... never see any of that s***. i don't use the chat interface at all.
i just trade with my co-op buddy. he is pushing the woodwork, clothing, enchantment crafts & i am pushing the blacksmithing, alchemy, provisioning crafts. so we collect all we can... swap what we don't use. all my good gear & weapons are stuff i made & my buddy enchanted. i like the way that eso makes it really worthwhile to push the crafts rather than buy (or even find) good gear. every 2 levels i make myself new gear pretty much :D
the guild join requests from recruiters is kinda annoying. i get a guild join request nearly every time i go into a town :/

Surely that can be turned off.
I agree with khel, it's a bulls*** excuse and sounds like they didn't want to spend time properly working out a good auction house mechanic. Best gear at low prices means the best gear needs to be harder to source.

I actually really like the system, and don't think I could go back to an AH like WoW. In saying all that, it does need some polish, like filters working properly and a search function. Also just like in WoW people are annoying and place one of a stackable item up for sale which is just so bizarre.
Really loving this game, so damn addictive and even roped the girlfriend in which is a first for her.

If you're buying you can either buy immediately at whatever the current market price is, or set a buy order at a price you want to buy at. Say you want silk cloth, and its currently at 50s each, but you think thats too much and you're only willing to pay 30s each, you can make a buy order for whatever quantity you want, at 30s a piece and if/when the market hits your price, your buy order will be filled from the sell orders other players have placed, and you'll get mailed your items. You don't have to worry about any nonsense like buying 50 stacks of 1 if you want 50 either, you just make an order for 50 and you get 50, even if behind the scenes its sourced from multiple different sell orders, you don't have to care. Theres even already an addon out that lets you scan the prices and graph them over time so you can see the highs and the lows and any trends.

I do agree Khel that the commodity approach is a lot nicer, especially for a buyer who can just walk by and grab what they want without worrying about if its listed or not. I'd love to see that in ESO, but with crafting being the best source of gear its clear why they went for Guild Stores, to entice community feedback and get the "best" crafters utilising different guild stores to offload their gear.

They go further too by selling an item you can buy off the website for $20. If you use the item ingame it gives you a month of play time. You buy them with IRL money then sell the item on the Market. This means people who play smart and make money can play for free, but at the same time CCP gets paid for that month (+$5 as well). It also stops gold sellers because you can now buy ingame funds by buying one of these items and selling it for ingame currency, which is perfectly legal.
Nobody loses except gold sellers. $20 for about 600,000,000 ISK.

No they are still hitting the game hard. I'm using an add-on to just auto-ignore the all the gold sellers. Got sick of reporting them.

And it's great to see another MMO doing this, one of my biggest hates in an MMO is feeling the need to grind away at useless tasks to earn money especially when it takes away the fun of actually playing the game.
I had no issues with funding myself in eve with plex, it allowed me to get into ships and start having fun rather than chasing that dream of earning squillions from mining or some other stupid job.
That's not to say mining and those are stupid jobs are stupid, they are a great way to break up the game, but putting emphasis on them to earn an income is just pointless.
