Two-man squad Eneme Entertainment has unveiled a six-minute gameplay trailer of their upcoming title Eitr, which takes a nice dash of Souls-style combat mixed in with the ultra-dark isometric dungeon playstyle of Diablo. Oh yeah, did we mention a Norse-themed overworld to help seal the deal?
Combat in Eitr is one of careful positioning. You'll want to ensure that there is enough distance between you and your enemy, allowing you to learn their attacks to effectively counter them. You'll also need to monitor your stamina, because if you don't death will be dealt quickly by all but the most basic of enemies.
"Eitr" is from Norse mythology, it is a black poison substance that corrupts whoever or whatever it comes into contact with. The story of the game is based around the world tree, Yggdrasil, the connector of the 9 Norse worlds, which becomes poisoned with Eitr, spewing darkness into each world.
The Game, Eitr, is an Action RPG which takes inspiration from games such as Dark Souls, Path of Exile and the Diablo series. The game will be challenging and require timing and precision to progress through the environments. Players will need to use a combination of blocking, combos, buffs and positioning to succeed in battle.
Another Souls-like inspiration is the checkpoint system, dictated by fireplaces littered around the world. Unlike Souls though, death is dealt with by a roulette wheel with a selection of negative effects including XP loss, before respawning you at the last fireplace visited. How crippling that will be isn’t obvious, again due to the pre-alpha state of the game, but it’s an indication that classic, extreme difficulty is the design goal.
The two-man squad of Eneme Entertainment, comprising artist and game designer David Wright and coder Tobi Harper, have only been working on the game since August. They’ve been documenting the entire thing in quite a lot of detail over on the TIGSource forums. I'm extremely excited to see what comes of Eitr as it no doubt offers some rather unique twists to series that have worked well in the 3D plane.
No release date has yet been announced, nor any platform outside of PC.
