The global pandemic has seen many in-person events get cancelled over the past couple of years, with E3 being one. With PAX Australia returning this year, alongside events like GDC, today comes word that E3 2022 has been cancelled. But even though the even won't be happening, it'll be back next year.

With the ESA providing the following statement to IGN.

We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience. We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023.

E3 is of course an institution and the reason why so many big game reveals, hands-on looks, teasers, and developer insights happen in June. From Microsoft to Nintendo to Sony and everyone else, E3 set the tone for a mid-year celebration of games coming soon.

Even without an official E3 this year you can still expect to see major showcases and events. From Xbox lifting the lid on Starfield through to Nintendo holding its annual Big Direct and Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. Geoff took to Twitter earlier today to confirm that Summer Game Fest will kick off with announcements, news, and first looks.
