In a surprise move Bethesda opened its E3 conference earlier today with a first look at id Software's new game, Quake Champions. Although what we got to see was a pre-rendered cinematic trailer, that didn't detract from excitement that a new multiplayer Quake game was incoming from id. Plus, the news that it's being built to take advantage of modern PC hardware was welcome news.

Further details on Quake Champions will be revealed at this year's Quakecon in August, so all we really have to go on is the trailer. And a few tidbits like the fact that will feature a cast of diverse characters, each with their own abilities. Presented by Studio Director of id Software, Tim Willits, he stated that Quake Champions will provide "A competitive arena-style first-person shooter for the PC designed for players of all skill levels." And that, "Whether you are new to Quake or have been fragging for the last 20 years, Quake Champions will give you the challenge and rush you’d expect from id Software multiplayer games."

I saw the Quake name, cheered, saw the trailer, cried. Was sincerely hoping a continuation of Quake 1, not Quake III copied in to Overwatch/TF. A shame really.
