One of the big surprises that came with the gameplay reveal for id Software's follow-up to DOOM (2016) was the announcement that multiplayer will not take on the form of traditional deathmatch. No, taking a page out of the Dark Souls playbook players and groups will be able to invade someone's campaign to try and take out the Doom Slayer.
Showcased in video form first, with id's Hugo Martin and Marty Stratton then confirming that the mode will be optional, Invasions will no doubt add another dimension for those playing the campaign with the feature turned on. The ability to team up as a group of demons and monsters and then work as a team to take on the new all-powerful Doom Slayer sounds like the right direction for DOOM Eternal's multiplayer. Full details on how it will work in terms of balancing have yet to be revealed, but expect the feature to launch alongside DOOM Eternal which is currently in development for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
Yeah, that last one is a cool little bonus and also expected thanks to the popularity of the DOOM port released last year.
