Blizzard has made the surprising announcement that they will be removing Diablo 3's controversial auction house feature entirely from the action RPG. The shutdown is scheduled to take place on March 18 2014, and will occur before the launch of the forthcoming expansion, Reaper of Souls. (thanks Creepy)
When we initially designed and implemented the auction houses, the driving goal was to provide a convenient and secure system for trades. But as we've mentioned on different occasions, it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the AH system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo's core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot. With that in mind, we want to let everyone know that we've decided to remove the gold and real-money auction house system from Diablo III.
We feel that this move along with the Loot 2.0 system being developed concurrently with Reaper of Soulsâ„¢ will result in a much more rewarding game experience for our players.
We're working out the details of how the auction house system will be shut down, but we wanted to share the news as soon as we made the decision in order to give everyone as much advance notice as possible. Please note that the shutdown will occur on March 18, 2014. We will keep everyone informed as we work through this process.
A video from the team goes further to explain the reasoning behind the significant decision.

Awesome PR spin. The AH obviously isn't making enough money for it to be viable as it was in the early days. ...oh no we're doing it for you the players! Because we love you!
yeah in other words, we've got ours so now let's see if we can squeeze a few more bucks out of the people who otherwise wouldn't have bought the expansion after the f***awful taste we left in people's mouths after s***ting in their cereal a year ago. nice.
^ Spot on - basically calculated gamble that even if the money received from the auction house is enough to sustain it the AH might cannibalize sales of the DLC. There are hordes of players (including myself) that are now thinking 'hmm... might be worth another look'.
just needs local servers or better yet OFFLINE MODE. Whilst ah removal is definitely awesome - 200 - 250 ping is not. All i remember of playing d3 was lots of rubber banding and the consequent deaths in inferno, the core issue being latency between client and server. I got a refund after two weeks. If Path of Exile which is made by a small indie studio can afford AU servers surely blizzard can.
If I understood correctly Reverend Evil, it's because they need to let players who use the AH to "settle their affairs" haha. I left D3 on PC a while ago due to the AH, it was just a gold grind to buy your next upgrades. Playing it on console now, much better experience without the AH imo, minus the hacking that's starting to ramp up on console versions...
You guys who are complaining about lag - were you playing on an Asian server or NA? I played on SEA and never had any problems, but that was about a year ago.
Yeah, I think the problem that was being mentioned is "returned after a few weeks".
The servers have been stable for ages since then. After the first month or two, I didn't rubber band unless someone was torrenting in the house or something drastic like that.
good idea... but holy f*** why did it take so long to realise what we all knew already... and why the f*** not just pull the plug on the ah NOW... I still really want to play diablo3... i loved the game even with all the issues it had right up until i started using the AH at around the end of Hell difficulty... and the sensation of playing a game without a soul that i then felt after had persisted and been the primary prevention for me to return... looking forward to the expansion.
Having a large number of account bound items (not tradeable on the AH) was already a step in the right direction and largely removed a lot of the AH's usefulness. Giving everyone a heaps up is the right thing to do so everyone can sell their stuff that they paid real money for.

This is still one of my biggest bugbears with D3. Playing the game in SP mode.... there's rubber banding... WHY? (a poor DRM model/system which was touted as being a 'requirement' for the AH.)
What I don't get is why the 'gold' AH is going. I think there should be a means to 'market' off loot. (that being said, if the DRM had to continue in order to keep the AH 'taint/hack/cheater free' I'd just as soon say burn them both and let people get back to actually enjoying what was once the 'dominating force' in dungeon crawling games.
