Launching last week the numbers for LawBreakers, the new team-based multiplayer shooter from Cliff Bleszinski and Boss Key that hearkens back to the days of Unreal Tournament, haven't been all that great. Peaking at only a few thousand players at launch, it's a shame because the game itself is great. Having played a few rounds over the weekend we can say that it definitely lives up to its promise.
That being, a return to the fast twitch-based shooting of old. With the modern team-based mechanics that involve various abilities ala Team Fortress and Overwatch. Speaking with Eurogamer, Cliff Bleszinski responded to the low player count so far stating, "It's a marathon not a sprint. I'd rather be the underhyped game that slowly ramps up into something that people adore than something that comes out with way too much hype that there's a backlash for, which is why I think the Steam reviews are so positive. We're going to continue to raise awareness, [and] continue to support the product".
And he's spot on, both in game and on Steam the feedback is almost unanimously positive. And it's not hard to see why. In addition to looking fantastic and running great on PC, the mechanics and FPS-feel is spot on. But more than that, the Zero-G stuff, where in sections of the map giant orbs create small sections of gravity-free chaos work exceptionally well. And strangely, require very little practice to get used to. Outside of the the modes themselves which range from takes on various capture modes and CTF, are quick and enjoyable. Map design feels great too, no doubt thanks to several months of play-testing.
In fact, as a whole LawBreakers leaves a great first impression. It's something that we'd love to see succeed. It's a polished, fun, and impressive debut. Oh, and it's available for PlayStation 4 too.
