With the first title to take advantage of the feature being Psyonix's Rocket League. For those that need a refresher in the whole cross-network play deal, its essentially the thing where console and PC games can play the same games online, together, regardless of platform. A quasi gaming utopia where it doesn't matter what box you own. This new update to the Xbox One will allow all developers to add this support to their games, including indie titles.

As to why it took Microsoft, whose Windows 10 operating system powers both the Xbox One and most gaming PCs, this long to implement this feature is anyone's guess. Plus, the whole cross-platform thing can already be seen on PlayStation 4 with titles like the aforementioned Rocket League and the recently released Street Fighter V. In fact the whole thing feels long overdue. But, better late than never. The best part though is that it won't be restricted to Windows 10 Store games, this new cross-play feature will support "other console and PC networks."

And by saying other console does Microsoft mean PlayStation 4? Well, that's a given. Here's hoping the Rocket League update will allow for cross-play between PC, PS4, and Xbox One players. Wouldn't that be something.

Yeah well the PS4 may already have cross-platform support but if no developer bothers making games that do this, then the idea is not worth much.
With regards to the Xbox, well MS had this in the works for a long time, what with their Windows 10 update AND free upgrade rolling out for PCs.

Regardless, the same issues still apply like last time this was attempted by MS/Sony.
For arguably the biggest gaming genre, ie FPS, the kb&m combo is a big advantage and balancing that is still an issue. Will console gamers now actually shell out money for a kb&m just so that they don't get destroyed by their PC superiors? Not sure.

I like the idea, but I think it will be a few years yet until this is practical.

Xbox to pc doesn't interest me much, cos yeah, with the different control schemes its not a great fit for a lot of games. Cross platform play between Xbox and ps4 though, that sounds f*****g awesome, and something both parties should have swallowed their pride and done years ago.
