Console Wars is based on the excellent book of the same name by Blake J. Harris (who co-produces and directs with Jonah Tulis), presenting a feature-length documentary about the 16-bit console battle between SEGA and Nintendo. It's headed to CBS All Access on September 23.
No word on which streaming platform it'll arrive on in Australia, but judging by the trailer we're excited to watch this one. Especially as youngsters who grew up during the whole Sonic versus Mario debate armed with SEGA Mega Drives and Super Nintendos. Which console was cooler?
An Official Selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, CONSOLE WARS takes viewers back to 1990 when Sega, a fledgling arcade company, assembled a team of underdogs to take on the greatest video game company in the world, Nintendo. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pit brother against brother, kids against grownups, Sonic against Mario, and America's unique brand of capitalism against centuries-old Japanese tradition. For the first time ever, the men and women who fought on the front lines for Sega and Nintendo discuss this battle that defined a generation.
Executive producers on the doc include Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen who were at one point going to turn the story into a dramatic series. No doubt that would have been very cool to see, and who knows, that may happen down the line.
