A new developer diary style video for the upcoming free-to-play Command & Conquer found its way online over the weekend. Titled "Beyond the Battle: Part 1", the clip features serveral senior members of the Victory Games team talking about their aspirations for the title.

Notably, the video features a guest appearance from Louis Castle, one of the co-founders of original Command & Conquer developer West Wood Studios, and a bold comment from the new game's Lead Designer Samuel Bass, who is hoping to "Wash the stain of C&C 4 away", indicating that the team wants to distance itself from the poorly received 2010 title.

Victory Games Senior Technical Game Designer Jeremy Townsend describes the roots of the franchise as being "base building that doesn't feel like a chore, harvesting that doesn't require your full attention, and a focus on fast-action and lots of viable strategies in the actual combat", and hopes that the Victory Team can recreate those pillars.

Overall the team appears excited about developing the game as a service, as opposed to a one-off retail product, praising the ability they're going to have to be able to respond to player feedback to balance the game in a live product.

There's a few new bits and pieces of gameplay in its Frostbite 2 glory as well. Watch the video below.

Command & Conquer is expected to launch this year, and beta registrations are now open over at commandandconquer.com.

Yeah, pretty sure C&C4 and RA3 passed without much attention. Ive seen them on cheap steam sale a few times now and always been interested but figured they wouldnt be worth it for solo play. Some coop or versus with a mate would be fun tho IMO.

If Mr. Bass wants to wash that stain first they need to make sure the game doesn't also become pay 2 win, otherwise the stain will get bigger.

And yea the game could've been good didn't mind a bit lan generals back in the day some good senseless spamming fun but pay to win will mean new generals every month with broken abilities and who knows what else while

I have CnC 4 boxed copy if you want it. Its crap-tastic. While EA is at it, wash away the stain that is Red Alert 3 too.

Generals 2 looks alright, Not keen on it being F2P though but we will just have to wait and see. I am only really interested in Skirmish. They said if things go well after launch, they might put a campaign in. I only ever play skirmish in RTS. I can not deal with a****** who wine that Im not some elite 150-300 APM player. I am only here for fun not to compete to be king of a webpage with a ladder on it.

C&C3 was cool; I only played 4 briefly and it seemed s***.

3 has got Sawyer from Lost and that chick from House!

If the original westwood dude are involved it might bode well, were they not in 2, 3, and 4?

Simply cannot be excited for this, killed by business model. Sadly though many seem to eat up pay-to-win.

Is it gunna be pay to win? I was hoping the paid s*** was all cosmetic like in DOTA2.

The cynic inside me thinks it will be. Of course I can't say for sure.

I'm the same, my one and only online game of generals was met with a paladin tank zerg with in the first 5 or 10 mins.... quit. My only ever MP game of C&C 4 was met with a mass infantry rush with in 5 mins... quit. That s*** is not at all fun. Played ass loads of skirmish though and a fair bit of LAN generals with mates who were not going to just rush one unit type asap. Playing Wargame: Airland Battle atm, it's pretty good, control of air units needs work though.

Yeah, wouldnt be surprised Trauma. Even s*** like the unlocks for BF3 are kinda cheap IMO. Im sure the higher weapons n unlocks dont make much difference but paying to access them early is lame IMO.

Ive hardly played any RTS online versus randoms cause im pretty f*****g bad. I hate the whole micro thing and prefer just building masses of 1 unit rather than an evenly balanced force. Maybe played only 1 game of 2v2 CoH with 3 other randoms and somehow won that game.

Used to play some RA2 and CnC Generals coop or versus mates with or without AI in the game. Tonnes of fun cause we were all pretty s***. I remember 1 game of 2v2 RA2 and we all had a habit of turtling. Decided i would rush a truck (whatever it was called) with engineers in early in the game n managed to take 1 dude's construction yard and refinery. His ally then immediately pwned my ass in retaliation but that moment was my best ever RTS move. Also played some RA2 1v1 versus my dad back in the day. Games used to take ages as we built epic bases then eventually moved in for the kill.

not really sure how you could find playing skirmishes beyond the few games fun, once you work out the AI traits it doesn't even become a competition

Same reason I only ever played stronghold on economic mode, I'm not really there for a super challenge, just to build, stuff about and blow s*** up.

I do how ever expect RTS AI to have vastly different play styles, like turtle, rush, economic, support etc.

Not wrong pave. I used to play skirmish mode for CoH, CnC Generals n RA2 and the AI always seemed to have a number of paths to your base - normally straight up the middle meaning you never had to worry about your flanks. Pretty s*** but IIRC there were AI improvement mods but i never looked into them.

I remember in the first Red Alert skirmish when playing against AI, you could send a Rifleman to attack the AI Ore Truck, the AI would send every single unit at your base. Little does the AI know you have Tesla Coils sitting on top of ridges all the way there so by the time the AI gets to your base he doesn't have much left.

You'd be surprised pave. I am amazed at how many vs AI games I see on SC2 and CoH. People play the same maps vs the same AI constantly and don't get bored. I can't see how it's fun but fair play to them if they like it go ahead (float ya boat).

RTS online is so much fun. Sure it is harder than picking up an FPS and playing online but it is also a lot more rewarding IMO.

I have been following the new C&C in the last few weeks and apparently they are trying to stay away from pay2win. I doubt it will be like the awesome Valve system but I don't think it will be like Battlefield Heroes either (was the definition of p2win).
