The PC community had a lot to cheer about when news broke that popular console fantasy romp, Dark Souls, would be headed their way. Things have turned a little darker in the past 24 hours though, with Namco Bandai announcing at a press conference overnight that the game would support Games For Windows Live - something said community is not happy about.

"GFWL is unpopular, difficult to use, inconvenient, has terrible online support (a key feature in Dark Souls), and is downright unpleasant," reads a statement on a petition to have the GFWL support removed from the product on Change.org. "After anxiously awaiting a PC release for this fantastic game it feels like a real slap in the face hearing Dark Souls will use Games for Windows Live.

"We recommend Valve's Steamworks in place, as this DRM is much easier to use, less intrusive, more reliable, and more accepted among PC gamers," the statement continues. "Please reconsider the use of GFWL, or offer the game on both services. Thank you for taking the effort to port this game, but for a lot of customers it's Steam or no sale."

At the time of writing, the petition signature count is sitting at 13,925. Drop us a line in the Comments section if you plan on signing too.

Never had a problem with GFWL. Have had problems with Steam.

"Steam or no sale" just makes them sound like whiners.

Nothing worse than a GFWL on a Steam game which is what I bet will happen if they want it both ways.

Hate having to authenticate a billion times just to get into a game.

I've never had a problem with Steam, but couldn't get GFWL working on my XP OS for years, despite trying the most elaborate hackeries known to nerd kind. Steam is fantastic in so many ways, GFWL I wouldn't trust with future support.

I prefer Steam. GFWL is just a pain in the arse. I've had so many problems getting it to work.

GFWL is an instant 'no sale' for me, for any game. It has to be one of the worst platforms I've ever used. So cumbersome, unresponsive, horridly buggy to the point it doesn't work properly.

GFWL seems to be really fickle. Personally I've never had a problem with it and quite like the integration with my XBox Live profile, but then I have a friend who bought DoW2 and could barely ever play multiplayer because of problems he had with GFWL.

Steam is better at what they both claim to do and everyone I know uses steam so I can chat via steam and steam has nearly all my games on it already thus...

GFWL is redundant and that is why it sucks - whatever usability issues some people have aside.

I never had problems i finished Fable 3 and GTA4 plus it's expansion...

Then the other day i wanted to show Fable 3 to my GF and it needed an update. So i tried to let it update because it wouldn't give me another option. It didn't update and didn't error. I couldn't do anything. I quit and an installer in the background said "couldn't continue as it was in use". I was stuck in some kind of dumbass cycle where the game clearly wouldn't quit itself so that GFWL could update and the launcher wouldn't wait for me to do it manually. I moved on and we played something else instead (peggle. we played peggle. it wasn't the best moment).

Anyway it's a POS and i haven't tried it since.

Edit: Why don't they have GFWL literally as an xbox style console on the PC. Much like Windows Media centre opens up have GFWL open up with an xbox like interface. That way it'd be synonymous with it's existing platform and a media pc would totally be worth having as a windows box.

+1 on the GFWL hate-wagon.

I've had a few games that were GFWL and either straight up didn't work or died during patching so I couldn't play online after the first few weeks of the title launch (*cough* section 8 : prejudice *cough*).

On the other hand, had nothing but good things from steam, excepting the occasional server busy issue on the launch day of a big game or a sale.

I care not for GFWL, It's just a hassle. I would be interested in buying it on steam though.

"Steam or no sale" just makes them sound like whiners.

What little I've used of games with GFWL is enough to make me hate it. I've only got 1 game with it in and that's enough for me.

At first it wouldn't connect because the installer that came with the game was out of date, and it wouldn't auto update either for whatever reason. I had to manually delete it and install it again after downloading it straight from MS.

Then if you go to play the game and your internet is down, forget about saving your progress because, yep! you guessed it, you can't save (in this particular game) unless you're connected to the GFWL service.

At least with steam is has offline sync things where it syncs with "the cloud" the next time it's connected.

in short: F*** GFWL.

Edit: Why don't they have GFWL literally as an xbox style console on the PC. Much like Windows Media centre opens up have GFWL open up with an xbox like interface. That way it'd be synonymous with it's existing platform and a media pc would totally be worth having as a windows box.

Or just integrate it into media center, or that stupid metro (sexual) interface windows 8 has.

No idea what the problem with GFWL is. Have about 6 or so games with the service and really I see it as a bit of nothing service, no use but no damage either. I log in, the game loads to menu, and I can see the same account stats that I see on my xbox via dashboard.
People whinge about it, but it isn't really anything like Steam which is highly developed towards selling games.
I think GFWL is just a place for Microsoft to stick achievements etc, not really a marketplace.
