And just like the act of saving hostages the key word is 'free', with all post-launch content being created around the idea that it's not the best move to insert a paywall between players and games that strive for an online presence. In a fairly lengthy post (and video) detailing its plans for Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft outlines four "seasons" of free content coming to the game.

With the only monetary exceptions being aesthetic skins for weapons and other cosmetics. Plus, access to new operators can be bought. But, regular play will ensure that they're also free too.

Over the course of a year, new content will come in the form of “seasons” that coincide with ranked gameplay. Over the course of the year we will be releasing:

  • 4 new maps (playable on both online multiplayer and Terrorist Hunt)
  • 8 new operators, with new primary/secondary weapons and unique Gadget
  • New cosmetic items
  • New game modes, events and/or activities

Maps and modes will be free and available immediately for everyone. New operators and most weapon skins can be unlocked with earned currency called Renown, or with R6 Credits (more on these below). The only new content that will be available exclusively by purchase will be a small number of premium weapon skins that are purely aesthetic and have no impact on gameplay.

  • In addition to this, there will also be a dedicated team monitoring all feedback to ensure the best possible experience. Translation, timely patches and the perfect conditions for an online shooter that evolves over time for the better.

So, it definitely looks like Ubisoft are ticking all the right boxes with this one. Rainbow Six Siege is out December. Check out the full post here, where details on the Renown system and more can be found.

Provided their 'play time' operator unlocks, etc isn't artificially lengthened to induce frustration at the grind and entice people to pay for it, I'm cool with their plans.
