And that's the all-time concurrent record for
Borderlands 2 - as Tweeted by
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. Although he didn't get into specifics, he stated that the peak concurrent player count for
Borderlands 3 on launch day was "twice-as-high", with a follow up Tweet on the weekend stating that the numbers grew from there.
Outside of the vocal criticism of the anticipated release becoming an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC, this is impressive. According to
SteamDB the all-time peak player count for Borderlands 2 was 124,678 recorded 7 years ago. If that number is what's being referred to then Borderlands 3 on PC saw roughly 250,000 players all storming through Pandora on their way to the stars over the weekend. Borderlands 3 proved to be a streaming hit too with the game topping Twitch throughout the weekend.
The launch of Borderlands 3 hasn't been without issues though, as performance across all platforms has proven to be somewhat spotty. Playing on Xbox One X using the game's performance mode it often dips well below the 60 frames-per-second target. According to a report
by Digital Foundry the performance issues are a lot more prevalent on PlayStation 4. With that in mind we've been playing using the game's near-4K mode on the Xbox One X which retains a mostly solid 30 frames-per-second. That said we have been experiencing stuttering.
On PC, and this is powered by an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, things are a lot smoother thanks to being able to adjust visual settings. Cranking things to maximum at the UltraWide resolution of 3400 x 1440 we saw a frame-rate in the range of 60-80 for the most part. Which is fine, but we kind of expected more based on the stylised look of Borderlands 3 - which is mostly the same as the last outing but with larger environments, improved lighting, and increased texture detail.
No doubt these issues will be addressed in patches moving forward, especially considering just how many people are playing Gearbox's latest.
