This one stings a little, as
BlizzCon is the sort of "coming home" style event that feels more like a giant reunion and celebration rather than work. One of the perks that comes from doing this gig is getting to attend an event just like it. Very few are like it. And with 2020 being what it is, the inevitable has happened - BlizzCon 2020 has been cancelled. But, there is some digital light at the end of the tunnel.
Blizzard's premiere community event and celebration has its own dedicated team that works full-time on planning. In
a new post Saralyn Smith, BlizzCon's executive producer notes that the decision wasn't come to lightly.
"We’ve had many discussions about what holding a convention could look like in light of all the health and safety considerations we’d want to make," Saralyn writes. "We’ve also talked about different paths we could take, and how each one could be complicated by fluctuations in national and local health guidelines in the months ahead. Ultimately, after considering our options, we’ve come to the very difficult decision to not have BlizzCon this year."
In regards to putting together an online version of the event, planning looks to be underway. "We’re talking about how we might be able to channel the BlizzCon spirit and connect with you in some way online," Saralyn adds. "We’d want to do this as soon as we could, but given that this is new-ish territory and the different factors involved, it will most likely be sometime early next year."
Last year's event housed the unveiling of Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 - so this year, no doubt, would have given us updated looks at both. Here's hoping
we get to play Diablo IV again sometime soon.
