That's Diablo IV game director Joe Shelly talking about the story of the game, which is set many years after the events of Diablo III, covering a new conflict between Lilith and Inarius - two forces from the High Heavens and the Burning Hells that created Sanctuary. If you've played Diablo 4 during any of the recent Beta weekends, you would have got a taste of what to expect and an early look at the dark and gothic tone of Diablo 4's narrative.

Blizzard's latest Inside the Game update for Diablo IV specifically covers the game's campaign and sets the scene without spoiling any major narrative beats. It's a fascinating look at the campaign because it highlights a more human story being told, focusing on the remnants of humanity in Sanctuary, what's left of the Horardrim, and the harsh world they inhabit.

Regarding the Beta's Act I narrative elements we experienced alongside millions of other players, there was a surprising amount of grey. As highlighted in this new deep dive, players can choose how to interpret what's going on in a way that isn't as simple as 'good versus evil.' So if so far you feel Lilith's 'break the chains' intentions are sound, you're not alone.

"The story of Lilith and Inarius is the darkest story we've ever told," Joe Shelly says. "It expands the mythos of Sanctuary and the lore of the series like never before."

And on the plus side, it has been crafted with new players in mind, so you don't need to be a Diablo veteran to follow the latest chapter in the Eternal Conflict between the forces of the High Heavens and Burning Hells. Check it out.

Heaven vs Hell is the classic good vs evil, light vs dark story, not sure why you would want lots of grey...

I think that's what makes this so interesting, to be honest. Less predictable and Lilith is just such a cool 'in betweener' in the overall story of Diablo and Sanctuary
