When Activision Blizzard first announced its plans to take Overwatch esports global with the introduction of a city-based Overwatch League, there was a genuine buzz throughout the industry. But that was months ago, and in that time we've been sitting here and waiting for more information. Okay, so putting together the world's first global professional esports league with city-based teams is no small feat. And today we've details on the first seven cities that will makeup the Overwatch League.
And they are: Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Miami-Orlando, San Francisco, Seoul, and Shanghai. With the team owners being:
Robert Kraft, Chairman and CEO of the Kraft Group and the New England Patriots (Boston)
Jeff Wilpon, Co-Founder and Partner of Sterling.VC and COO of the New York Mets (New York)
Noah Whinston, CEO of Immortals (Los Angeles)
Ben Spoont, CEO and Co-Founder of Misfits Gaming (Miami-Orlando)
Andy Miller, Chairman and Founder of NRG Esports (San Francisco)
NetEase (Shanghai)
Kevin Chou, Co-founder of Kabam (Seoul)
The first season of the Overwatch League is still on track to kick-off later this year. For the inaugural season, all matches will be played at an esports arena in Los Angeles as "teams develop their local venues for formal home and away play in future seasons". Matches will take place on the usual sport-friendly days of Thursday through to Saturday.
In addition to keeping local revenue and league-wide revenue sharing across advertising, broadcasting, and merchandising, teams will also be able to operate and monetize up to five local amateur Overwatch events each year.
Yeah, this is starting to sound a lot like an Overwatch League.
