Bethesda has officially confirmed that a "new version" of the much-anticipated Doom 4 title is under-development for next-gen consoles, however it appears the game is a long way off.

Speaking with Kotaku, several sources close to the development team at Id Software have shared various information regarding the news on Doom 4's development cycle, including mentions of " a studio plagued by mismanagement and lack of communication that has frustrated staff both at Id and Id’s parent company, ZeniMax."

After almost five years of development and no actual discussion of the game besides a few leaks of artwork, the team at Id Software decided to scrap the entire game in 2011, pushing to reboot their newest game completely. According to one of the sources, development on the title is "not going well", however Bethesda has since confirmed that the title is still on-track and in-development.
“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” Bethesda's vice president of marketing and public relations Pete Hines said in a statement to Kotaku.

“As a result, Id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know.”
One of the sources also claimed that during the tepid release of RAGE, ZeniMax, parent company of Bethesda and id Software, decided to start getting more involved with Id’s development process. What followed was the cancellation of RAGE 2 and the "downsized plans for Rage’s DLC."

After the project was cancelled, development teams were merged together to be all placed on Doom 4. What is also of interest is that apparently Id has also taken to utilising the RAGE code, building off from it by incorporating many of Doom 4's features into RAGE itself.

Currently no one knows exactly when Doom 4 will be released and what it will offer to those who have eagerly been waiting since the release of Doom 3, but Bethesda seems confident in that we will see the game one day.
