Here is the latest and greatest multiplayer experience for Battlefield 3 (due out 25th October for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360), fresh from Gamescom in Cologne, Germany (AusGamers' own Steve is there right now to get the goods). This trailer features a preview of the impressive jets, helicopters and vehicles, and a taste of what a 64 player conquest map will be like. One word. Hectic.
Also note, consoles won't be getting jets, and are limited to 24 player multiplayer maps.

Oh really, sux for them.
Looks ok, still feels small, was funny to hear them talk themselves up about scale among other things on the live feed.

Looking forward to joining all the other 32 players on my team waiting for a jet to spawn... :D

It will prolly be like the other BF games where some lucky guy grabs a plane only to be shot down by teammates because they didn't get it.
Gonna be an awesome game either way though.

Oh, and about the jet speeds, I remember earlier on a developer stating they wanted to keep the speeds somewhat un-realistic due to the nature of the maps. You can't have a jet doing mach 5 and raining fire down upon the ground. It's not feasible for balance.

BF map size is an unholy balance between extremely fast aircraft and extremely slow infantry, but on the whole they've done a pretty decent job in the past. The maps can't be too small or there's no point in using the jets, they can't grow too big or the dudes that end up on foot or in a lumbering tank feel like it's an eternity before they can get back in the action.

Wonder if they are going to bring the whole "Commander" thing in for BF3 like BF2 had. Anyone heard anything about it?

Well played Battlefield, well played. (except for Origin, that sucks. Someone will need to make a Origin/Steam client hybrid so we only have to 1 run content platform application, get to it).

Thanks guys :)

I don't really care whose online distribution system needs activation, if I want the game I buy it. With the exception of 2142 and BF1943 I have all the BF games including expansions.

BATTLEFIELD 3 BETA: 48HR EARLY ACCESS* (09.2011)
Can anyone clarify what that means? does it mean you get beta access for 48 hours before release? if so that's a lame incentive lol.

That's cause it was totally s*** and buggy when it came out. Plus many/most of the end users were on dial-up at the time, which didn't play nicely with Steam as it needed lots of bandwidth for authentication, updates, news feeds, etc.
It's improved greatly over the years to the point where it doesn't really get in the way. Like I said in another thread, Origin is where Steam was about 6 years ago in terms of features and maturity.

Yeah this is my problem with multiple platforms, that and needing to know that the service will stick around for a very long time (I still bust out old DOS games from time to time), which I trust Valve with over most anybody else.
I've tried to come up with a few possibilities for a file format which could be imported into any library software, while containing the credentials and download source for a digital product (which, in the case of games, is a bit harder due to needing to also install/patch in unique ways), dunno if the distributors would want to go that way though (no advertising, probably less sale's tax, etc). Or perhaps just a product ID and distributor ID, with locally saved credentials for each distributor within the library platform (perhaps a download method can also be negotiated, via a standardised protocol for getting OS dependent instructions/whatever). I just really want my library combined damnit. :/

It means you get access to the beta that's coming in September 48 hours before it's open to the public.

This doesn't really bother me, cos I rarely ever actually start a game through Steam anyway, I have shortcuts to all my games on my desktop. As long as you can make a shortcut to an Origin game that starts up Origin then the game, I can't see it changing how I play my games at all.
