Our recently-published interview with Microsoft's Phil Spencer gathered a lot of interest in the media for his comments regarding the potential for cross-platform play on Xbox One with PC and other devices saying that it "makes a lot of sense". Now it seems Nintendo is following suit, only they've gone one better.

VG247 reports that indie developer Ripstone will be launching Pure Chess on the Wii U later in the year and, when they asked Nintendo for an option to open up the game to cross-platform play with not only mobile devices and PC, but also Sony's rival console, they were surprised to get a red-tape free nod in the affirmative.

"[Nintendo] said, "yep, no problem. You can have other console players playing against Wii U players. You can have smartphone players play against them. No problem," explained Ripstone creative director Phil Gaskell. "We’re still talking to Sony about them relaxing their policies, but we don’t think they’ll have any issue with it. So when we launch Pure Chess you’ll be able to play against Wii U, 3DS, iOS and Android players. And when we patch PlayStation those consoles will be added into the mix as well."

The article also points out that the Aussie-developed Cubemen 2 will also offer cross-platform play from Wii U with iOS, Mac, Linux and PC -- which we also reported on.

Perhaps next-gen will be more than just Cloud, TV on your console and more processing power, maybe we can finally start tearing down those multiplayer walls for an expanded and better sharing experience.

No probs for Indie games. One could argue that touch screen is actually better for certain Indie games.

Racing, fighting (MK style games), 2D platform games etc, would all crossplatform well.
