AusGamers is seeking a new member for our editorial team to help us out with our day-to-day operations in our Brisbane office.

This is an part-time/casual entry-level position that is suitable for someone with flexible hours (like a student), or someone keenly interested in working in the world of games journalism.

You will be working as part of a small team on one of Australia's biggest gaming sites, supporting our other editorial staff in the creation and management of our content services.

While the job is primarily non-technical in nature, we are after someone that has an excellent working knowledge of PCs, particularly as it relates to anything to do with video gaming.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Researching and writing news posts
  • Monitoring various channels and news services for new and interesting news
  • Data entry into various databases
  • Maintaining our files database and mirroring files
  • Transcoding and publishing videos
  • Managing game databases and assets
  • Liaising with game developers and publishers to obtain new content
  • Liaising with PR agencies
  • Occasionally having to play new or upcoming games and write about them
  • Performing some work outside of business hours, primarily Saturday mornings.

The successful applicant will possess the following qualities:

  • Incredibly excellent written communication skills. Seriously, if you apply for this via email and make a spelling mistake in your application letter, forget it. People do this.
  • Keen interest in video gaming across both console and PC.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Internet and related applications, in particular web browsing
  • Familiarity with social networking and related concepts.
  • Ability to work as an important part in a small team, often under tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to take the initiative and work autonomously.
  • Good working knowledge of Windows (command line knowledge advantageous)
  • Some experience with Linux via ssh (knowing how to navigate directories and use tools like wget would be fine)
  • Basic knowledge of software licensing (differences between open source, freeware, Creative Commons, etc).
  • Basic understanding of HTML advantageous
  • Ability to occasionally work from home advantageous.
If you have any questions please feel free to post them in the comments!.

Interested applicants should send through their C.V. to us directly at jobs1112@ausgamers.com!

Is this an on-site position, or one that's possible to be filled by a remote applicant?
I know just the person that would be suitable for this...

At the moment we are looking for someone in Brisbane that can work in the office. If you hit every single thing on that list though, I'd be interested in hearing from you.

Age isn't really a factor. Junior is only in reference to it being an entry-level position.

Junior is usually a reference to pay level rather than age :p
Sent this on to my cousin, might be something he's interested in.

I applied for the last one when I hated my job. Job now pays triple what I was earning back then and I still really really really want to apply for this one.

Heh, I live right around the corner from you guys, but sadly I only tick the first few boxes. Keen to be an editor, but guess not that in depth with those programming style skills.

Well, I'm re-making my resume, might as well try. I am doing a games degree after all.

Hrm, I can tick all of the boxes, except for liaising in a professional manner, and living in Brisbane... Well, if you ever want to remotely outsource some of it part-time, I've been recently upset that my ssh skills are fading away...

edit: Truth be told I don't know that much about the Internet or the web, I've oversold myself.
edit2: Well, I passed this and others, maybe I'm actually an undiscovered genius.

None of them are what I would call "programming" skills; they're all relatively simple to learn. If you can roll on the command line and follow instructions then that is a big part of it.

No way man. After almost 10 years of frequenting the forums, working for AusGamers would be a dream, even if it was unpaid!

Imagine rocking up to work every morning and seeing Trog sitting there with his big red nuke button. It'd just be surreal.

When is the application closing date?

Is this a 25 words or less competition? And then you'll just randomly pick the winning entry right? (This is my application.)

Seriously though this would be fantastic for me, it's like the dream job. I would trade in my RBJ's for this.

Could you offer any kind of ball-park figure as to how much a position like this might pay?
Ryan
Posted 03:42am 12/12/11
@J, I don't think they would mention it here.

Much like above, this would be somewhat of a dream job. Maybe next year when there's an actual chance of me moving to Brissy i'll express interest. But for now, I sit and weep.

It's roughly $20/hour; whatever the award rate for data entry is in Qld.
skythra
Posted 08:25pm 14/12/11
Um.. there's an award for that? Might just be me, but last time I looked, there was basically nothing in QLD for award rates in most IT stuff.
Eorl
Posted 09:59pm 14/12/11
He means standard pay.
defi
Posted 11:23am 15/12/11
It's probably under the Clerical Award as its based on data entry. $20 an hour sounds about right.
