More heavy reading for you today, this time from the technically-crazy John Carmack of id Software.

Most of you know he's essentially charged with creating the first-person shooter, is amazing with software engines and in his spare time likes to dabble in designing rockets. But what you might not know is that he took a few extra months of tinkering time recently, this time to look at the state of head-mounted displays for games, after wondering why the technology floundered at the end of the 90s. Thankfully AusGamers was invited to sit down with the legendary designer and talk HMD shop before getting a taste of what he'd cooked up in his lab with an actual gameplay hands-on, eyes-in demo.

This isn't a news article announcing its existence, this is a one-on-one interview about the device and Carmack's hopes, and hands-on impressions.

Sounds bloody awesome. Carmack has always been about attention to detail and implementing things properly the first time round. Judging by the way he has systematically broken VR down into several technical problems that need to be addressed and resolved one by one, this looks really promising.

i got a sony hmz-t1 imported from the states and got a down transformer for the elec. Works pretty good, there is a whole community dedicated towards modding the damned things, very interesting stuff. It basically lets you view any hdmi enabled device on a screen that is as big as your eyes can see in darkness. Gaming is weird, its okay for simplistic third person games, but rts / fps games are too hard to play competitvely with something hanging off your head and constantly drawing focus away from the game itself, as for watcing movies, it doesnt get any better.
