Tagged as DayZ with dinosaurs, ARK: Survival Evolved has come out of its closed beta shadows and reared its horned head on Steam Early Access today, developer Wild Card has announced.
Need any more convincing you should check this out? Here's their tagline: "Fly on Pterodactyls, Create Tribes Bound in Blood, Build Jurassic Mansions, Throw Dino Dung, and More".
ARK takes on the survival genre with a unique blend of emergent multiplayer cooperation and competition. Players awake naked and starving on the beach of a mysterious island among a herd of other confused humans. They immediately discover that going it alone is a dangerous hardship. Those who work together will quickly learn there is power in numbers. What is the secret to survival? Each person must contribute to the collective effort: hunt, harvest resources, craft tools, research technology, and build shelters to protect against scorching days, freezing dark nights, volatile weather systems, ferocious wildlife, and lurking predators.
The open-world design of ARK is so big, mysterious, and filled with revelations that gamers will constantly be adapting and learning about its seemingly endless content. This includes a deep level of customization from the very beginning in the character creation screen, enabling highly unique features, from the herculean to the intensely bizarre. Players can:
Join a tribe, plant renewable crops and build an entirely functioning village with a sustainable economy
Train and level up “pet” dinosaurs to carry allies, inventory and equipment
Increase levels by experiencing the varied elements that the island has to offer
Sneak up on unsuspecting survivors, render them unconscious, then steal their gear
Grab a ringside seat to watch dinosaurs battle to the death
Maintain individual health by searching out meat sources, plant types, and drinkable water, or starve
Craft clothing to protect yourself from extreme weather conditions or freeze to death
Build a deluxe, multi-story house that includes ramps, beams, gates, remote gates, trapdoors, water pipes and faucets, generators, wires, electrical devices and more
The game is available now on Steam Early Access for USD $24.99, and is planned to make a complete release in 2016 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One with Morpheus and Oculus support.
Dinos are back in games in a big way, let's hope this is the start of a defining trend.
If you computer can run it, it's worth buying a copy and supporting the devs as the content is there to make a great game and it has a lot of potential.
this is my first early access game and I want to know if the game gets released to full public access that I keep the game and wont have to buy it again
i have a overclocked 5930k, ddr4 3000mhz ram, 2x 7970 in crossfire, this game runs like ass. i was getting 15 or so fps at low - med settings 2560x1440. ill wait a few months to see if this becomes playable :/
The crafting is awesome, thew combat is glitchy but ok, the graphics needs buckets of work. By the time you get the game to "playable" it's ugly.
Not quake brown sharp ugly.
The black screen bug is really freaking ruining this game for me. It takes like 10 minutes to load, and then most of the time it sits on a black screen until i give up and close the process.

SLI isn't supported by UE4 yet, so try turning that off and playing it. I've heard that people playing with multiple cards on will get terrible frames (but I turned mine off and STILL got terrible frames :P )
To get better frames, drop everything but textures and view distance down to low (keep those two on high). Try the cell buffer thing on high as well, but not sure if it makes a diff. Also, bump the reso down, it should make a big difference in the meantime. They said "give us a few weeks" in regards to optimisation, so hopefully when you come back it should be stable and giving some nice FPS. They actually have "improve GPU performance" as one of their goals over the next 2 days (They have a goal list on the discussion forums of what they're going to achieve for that patching period of 2 days).
And even while I was running it at 15fps (I think my video card needs a clean out), I still had a f***-ton of fun. I went into the jungle (big mistake, pitch black under that canopy...) and had 2 sabre-toothed tigers kill a group of 3 raptors. Basically, they started fighting over who would get to eat me... (the tigers won...)
When this game comes out and people (hopefully) move to a more co-op mindset (come on RP PVP Aussie servers!), village VS village wars are going to be f*****g incredible. The RP potential is pretty insane and I'm getting a half chub just thinking about it.
Any word if early access will hit the PS4?
I don't think so, though they may end up doing a beta closer to console release. *shrug* The only things they've said that I've seen (or paid attention to, IDGAF about consoles :P ) are that it will have Proj Morpheus and Oculus VR support and that it will take about a year.

This is one of the jankier early access games i've bought into. It works like 10% of the time online.

You can do some pretty demented things.
