And it's out now across PC, Xbox One, and PS4. A team-based take on the battle royale genre set in the Titanfall universe (set thirty years after the events of Titanfall 2) with teams of three pitted against each other made up of different classes called Legends. For example the Wraith class can call in a Dimensional Rift to transport their team to a new location, and the Caustic class can let loose gas to send opponents running.
Speaking of running it doesn't look like the wall-running mechanic from Titanfall has made the jump to Apex Legends, nor the titular titan mechs. What is here though is the speed, which looks pretty impressive in motion. Check out the gameplay trailer below.
As per the announcement, Apex Legends is playable right now, with eight playable Legends - each with their own abilities and strengths. In terms of battle royale mechanics players and teams will drop into the Kings Canyon map without gear - with different sections spawning different tiers of loot in the form of weapons and gear. Random drop-ships will also land containing the best gear. The total player count is 60. And of course there is the shrinking map deal there too.
One of the interesting new mechanics is the ability to respawn with each Legend carrying a Legends Banner. If a teammate manages to bring that to a Respawn Beacon then you're back in the fight. The whole Legends setup is somewhat similar to a hero shooter, as depicted in the following cinematic launch trailer.
Six of the eight Legends will be available to all right away with the remaining unlocking after continued play. There are loot boxes but in the style implemented by Oeverwatch and Fortnite are for cosmetic items only. Also, a season style roadmap of new content ala Fortnite is also planned.
