With a Xbox representative
telling IGN, "At Xbox, we are excited by the potential of AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology as another great method for developers to increase framerates and resolution." Adding we'll be hearing more about it soon.
The announcement makes sense as recently the company confirmed that
AMD's FidelityFX suite was coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. What makes the Super Resolution news interesting is that it's being presented as the
AMD alternative to NVIDIA DLSS. This means things like ray-tracing and other intensive effects, but without a massive hit to performance.
That said, AMD's use of traditional spatial-upscaling versus NVIDIA's AI deep learning still has a lot to prove.
But it sounds impressive, with several modes offered leading to sizable bumps in performance. Like DLSS, support will need to be added into games, though AMD has noted FidelityFX Super Resolution will be open and even possible to enable on NVIDIA GPUs like the Geforce GTX 1060. DLSS on the other hand is driven by the RTX line-up's Tensor Cores and requires an RTX GPU to enable. The results though
are stunning, which is why so many have been wondering what AMD's alternative might be.
It's expected that we'll begin to see the first iterations of AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution hit the PC gaming space later this month.
