Sony and Microsoft's latest console launches have seemingly helped boost AMD’s fourth-quarter financials, the firm has revealed in their latest report. The company arm responsible saw revenue of $865 million in the period as a result thanks to the AMD custom hardware inside the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
GI.biz reports (thanks
VG247) that the quarter ending December 28, 2013, AMD's Graphical and Visual Solutions division saw an increase of $326 million in the same quarter last year. As noted previously, both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One house custom AMD components, which together have sold over 7 million consoles worldwide since launching in November.
The arm’s operating income rose from $79 million to $121 million for the period, while full-year revenue comes in at $2.2 billion, which is up on the $1.42 billion earned in 2013. It isn't all sunshine and rainbows though as AMD’s Computer Solutions division did suffer a $7 million operating loss in Q4 on revenue of $722 million, with the department posting a full-year $22 million operating loss.
The combined divisions of AMD posted a Q4 revenue of $1.59 billion, a quite large 35 percent year-on-year increase, which equates to $89 million in net income. CEO Rory Read said of the figures, “Strong execution of our strategic transformation plan drove significant revenue growth and improved profitability in the fourth quarter. The continued ramp of our semi-custom SoCs and leadership graphics products resulted in a 38 percent revenue increase from the year ago quarter. Our focus in 2014 is to deliver revenue growth and profitability for the full year by leveraging our differentiated IP to drive success in our targeted new markets and core businesses.”
