PC gaming is as much about performance as it is fidelity, that is pushing the frame-rate to at least 60fps. With modern games running in resolutions like 1440p and 4K, and featuring hardware intensive effects like real-time ray-tracing it has led to the creation of upscaling tech like AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR.

Which in some ways is an answer to NVIDIA's impressive AI-based DLSS. AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution is a little different in that its algorithm doesn't requite AI hardware, or any sort of specific GPU to run, and with the latest 2.1 update it's taken a big step forward to improve visual fidelity. That is, bringing a massive boost to FPS performance without sacrificing image quality.

One of the big new features for the tech is how it minimises ghosting and artifacts, something that has been a problem. Showcasing what AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1 brings to the table, we get to see the difference in this video taken from Farming Simulator 22.

FSR 2.1 enhances the upscaling algorithm used by our technology and is designed to provide additional improvements to upscaling image quality over FSR 2.0 -- reducing some of the issues our software engineers identified in the initial release of FSR 2, such as ghosting or shimmering.

To go into a little bit more detail, some of the improvements in FSR 2.1 include:
  • Adding motion vector divergence to diminish locked pixels, which can alleviate ghosting.
  • Improved disocclusion logic to improve upscaling quality in some disocclusion cases.
  • Improved upscaled output quality with better color range and temporal stability.
  • Reactive Mask updates to alleviate ghosting issues on particles.
  • Composition and Transparency Mask updates to alleviate additional ghosting issues.

AMD FSR is open source and available for developers to implement in their games. And with the 2.1 update AMD has announced a batch of new titles supporting the tech, including: Choo-Choo Charles, Cyberpunk 2077, Deep Rock Galactic, Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed, Miasma Chronicles, No One Survived, Project Haven, Scathe, Scorn, VEIN, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

What's even cooler is that AMD FSR is supported by the Xbox Series X|S, which should hopefully lead to some impressive advances made in the form of console ray-tracing and visual fidelity in upcoming games.
