Hidetaka Miyazaki is worried people are turned off by the overbearing difficulty of his critically acclaimed dark fantasy hit, Dark Souls.

"I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult," the director recently said in an interview with Metro. "As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players [a] sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty. Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games."

In response to how the PC version came about, and if they were surprised at the fan petition and desire for the game to come to the desktop platform, Miyazaki confesses they weren't prepared.

"I confess that we did not plan to create the PC version at all on our development schedule," he said. "So the petition campaign was absolutely [a] big surprise for us. I believe that the petition was one of the main factors that we finally determine on creating the PC version."

Dark Souls Prepare to Die edition is currently available on PC, while an updated console version is scheduled to land late October.

Funny he mentioned satisfying vs difficult. I found Dark Souls to be the most satisfying game i've ever played. The combat is perfectly tuned, the game world is interesting. There is very little downside to this game.

This game is a paradox to me. I love that the game doesn't try and hold my hand at every opportunity, but at some point I just can't be bothered figuring out what the f*** I'm meant to be doing. It feels like they rely on people going outside of the game to messageboards in order to figure out how to play, and this seems like a bad solution to the original problem.

Its ironic that the thing that draws me to the game is eventually the thing that drives me away.

i can 100% agree with that, i have said it before the game is really satisfying when you get past some prick boss or an area you struggle with

once you get past the early learning curve (which saw me quit the game for a few months early on lul) it really is awesome and the most satisfying game

one my favs, i dropped diablo 3 pretty quickly after i realised it is a mmo grind fest to go back to this

any of you guys still playing on ps3? add me: paveway-3

Yeah it is difficult, and while that has good and bad points, when I get to a boss and die, I have absolutely no desire to walk the few minutes through "easy" enemies just to fight that boss again.. in other games i'll usually fight the boss a few times and if i fail then I rage... this game i fight one and die.. and then just cbf walking back to him. It's s*** like that which is more annoying than difficult.
While on the other hand, when you are actually exploring the area looking for the boss it can actually be tense and you do things carefully... but once youve done it, doing it again is just bleh.

It is such a two faced good/s*** type of game. (that goes triple for the dodgy pc port)

tbh i find it surprising he's said what he has, i'd hardly call it 'admitting defeat' that's the kind of thing i'd exepect to see today tonight advertising it as

i sort of thought that was what they were about making it difficult and that's how it is. it's what got demon's souls it's cult hit status

I guess they could make some more golds with an easy mode; all the kiddies could pick this up without rage quitting. The games kind of got their cult status due to the difficulty and reward, this and it's predecessor are two of the best games I've ever played, hell I tell my friends that to me, these are almost the perfect game.

If anything, they could have another look at those two archers in Anor Londo :P
