Attention all raiders of tombs! Do you like exploring ancient caves and whatnots in the hope of finding treasures of old. And whatnot. Good, because you'd probably be interested in this little gem of a game. Rise of the Tomb Raider it's called, available on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 (with PC to follow early 2016). It stars the wonderful (and very British) Lara Croft. It has all the tomb-y goodness you're after. Plus an action-packed adrenaline fueled story filled with ancient supernatural prophecy and mystery. And great hair-physics.

Here's a little snippet from the AusGamers review, by the incomparable Kosta Andreadis.

In real terms it roughly means that the tombs you get to explore feel real, ancient, mysterious, and fantastical. And often, all at the same time. In contrast, the tombs in 2013’s Tomb Raider felt like adjacent puzzle rooms. Visually impressive extensions to the environments you got to explore, but ones that nevertheless rarely rose to the same height of what’s on offer here. And don’t take that the wrong way, the Challenge Tombs in the original were indeed fun and challenging. They just felt a little tacked on. So it definitely comes with a sense of relief that Rise of the Tomb Raider features considerably more exploration than its predecessor. Simply getting to one of these Challenge Tombs may require delving deep into a mysterious cave, an adventure in its own right. An act that immediately that feels more true to the archaeological intention of their inclusion.

The last one was pretty good but also very linear, I was sort of expecting a more open world island base building and survival mechanics thing from early impressions I heard.

From the description of gathering and crafting it's hard to tell if it's just like the old system (picking up pieces while progressing through mostly linear story maps) or done dynamically, more like a minecraft / skyrim world.

Either way, I'll probably pick it up eventually when it's cheap on PC.

Hey Nerf, it's kind of like the old game except a few of the areas are much larger and feature side missions/tombs/crypts and stuff. So more freedom to explore, but still it's a linear game. I don't have a problem with that, I think it suits the type of story Tomb Raider goes for. And especially the more cinematic moments.

I really enjoyed the first one, especially the linear story and a bunch of the action set pieces. The variable tomb raiding felt a bit tacked on, but was cool, if they've built more of that in into the game in a more integrated way, that would be rad. Likewise a more open world would be cool, but that's a fine balance whilst still being able to have a kick-ass linear story hey. I'd favour the kick-ass linear story over a too open world, like Skyrim as the extreme open world example. As I feel you lose a lot of the momentum or impetus in the extreme open world games, and that detracts from the quality of the story telling. They are different kinds of games I guess.

Yeah I don't mind linear, it worked well, it just wasn't what I was expecting and I'm sort of hoping they psychically read my thoughts on the matter and tried the other thing. :P

Will most likely pick this up at some point, all because of Lara's line from the first game "Yes, still alive!" still making me laugh.

I hope it's not too open world, not every game has to be open world and I just don't have the time to play so many huge sprawling open world games, I want something a bit more focused. Open world games are already catered for well enough this year

I'd buy a DLC what was all about survival. The best part of the first one was the beginning in the woods with wolves. Faaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrk,

Yeah for sure, not all games need to be and this was fine without it. But from the pictures and early descriptions of the first one I somehow imagined hangliding around the island to tombs and stuff, sort of like the batman games, but with more building up your ways of getting around etc.

I'd buy a DLC what was all about survival. The best part of the first one was the beginning in the woods with wolves. Faaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrk,

Yeah this is what I was hoping for a lot more of.

Not that it disappointed me.

I enjoyed the first one and this does look like more of the same so it should be good. Though its not a game i'm going to be rushing out for to play. I'll wait till its cheaper and comes out on the superior platform.

good review, think it covers everything pretty well, especially the survival not really being a problem. I understand that there's DLC that will enhance that aspect of the game coming out in January

i'm enjoying the game. it's not open-world by any means, but is a great story so far. Normally i'm a skipper when it comes to 'reading' scrolls, but I've been getting immersed in the story. The more i think about it if she had to fight more for warmth and health/food it would really enhance the game. I also feel i now need to spend more time on the crafting side, rather than just rushing through the story to find out what is going on.

Yeah, MGS V is starting to piss me off, sending me all over the place for the side missions. Oh, you just did a mission over here on this top left corner of the map? Next mission will be on the other side of the map through some impassible mountains causing you to go on a maze of a journey like you're in f*****g IKEA.
