Which, would be quite the thing -- and this new
Nintendo Switch console could very well be the long-rumoured Pro edition that has supposedly been in development for a while. First Taiwanese publication
Econimic Daily reported on the console's supposed 2021 appearance, with
Bloomberg now chiming in to add that sources are reporting that the new Switch will support "4K high-definition graphics".
On that front we're a little skeptical, unless
Nintendo has partnered with
NVIDIA and borrowed Rick Moranis's shrink ray from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids to miniaturise an RTX 2080. The current Switch is powered by NVIDIA's mobile Tegra technology -- which is impressive but certainly not what you'd call 4K-ready. If we had to guess we'd say that Nintendo was working with NVIDIA to create a new custom chip to ensure full backwards compatibility.
The reports also indicate that Nintendo will begin production on the new Nintendo Switch console in 2021 -- with a planned release sometime later that year. With both the
PlayStation 5 and
Xbox Series X on the horizon, and Nintendo being very quiet this year when it comes to games in development, perhaps the company is going all out to create a high-def Switch with a crisp screen and the sort of appeal that would bridge the gap between the current models and other high-end portable devices.
