There’s been a recent trend with mechanical keyboards, where a minimal look and feel has led to a “nothing but the keys” visual design that can be seen in quite a number of products - even those coming from Corsair. The Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard might be a little old-school with its desk-filling size. But, it’s definitely a keyboard of the moment - designed to deliver comfort and performance, with an excellent suite of features.

And with that, the features extend to some lovely good-to-have things but maybe not essential for some. Dedicated media buttons and a wrist rest that’s soft to the touch. But above all, even here the Corsair K70 RGB PRO showcases its premium chops with media buttons worthy of a high-end VCR from the early 1980s (they’re some of the best we’ve seen on a keyboard to date) through to a volume slider that could be used to fine-tune the intensity of some sort of sci-fi laser beam. Ahem.

Basically, the Corsair K70 RGB PRO is sturdy, well-made, and something that more than earns its PRO tag. This is a premium keyboard well worth looking at. And this is backed up by the Cherry MX switches (with Red Linear tested for this review) that pair perfectly with the double-shot PBT keycaps. Which, if you’re unaware, deliver that nice non-slip non-fade feel to keep your keys looking and performing the same months down the road.

The Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is a full-sized wired mechanical keyboard. As such, Corsair has decided to go all out in terms of its physical design and additional features. There are the dedicated media controls and snap-on wrist rest as highlighted in the intro above, but you’d also got spots for buttons dedicated to profile switching, changing the RGB brightness, and even doing the “lock it down” thing to disable Windows and apps interfering when you’re gaming.

As a Corsair product, the K70 RGB PRO is game-first and then some, with an additional switch at the back to disable Corsair’s own iCUE software and extended RGB customisation in lieu of pure low-latency keyboard action. The build quality is exceptional too, with an aluminum top plate sitting on a hard plastic casing. The keys themselves have a great feel, and the Cherry MX Red Switches are up there in terms of performance with an impressive 100 million keystrokes guaranteed. Even the little things stand out, like the already hefty 1.15kg weight working alongside rubberised pads to ensure it won't move when in use.

Corsair offers different switch options for the K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, ranging from super-fast down to the clickiest of the clicky. For this review, we’ve used the Cherry MX Red linear option, which for many is the sweet spot for competitive games and day-to-day productivity. With 45g actuation force, a 2mm actuation point, and 4mm of total travel it’s a smooth type backed up by great keycaps and a somewhat overkill 8,000 Hz Polling Rate.

Okay, so with Polling Rates for your gaming keyboard or gaming mouse usually sitting in the 1,000 Hz range it’s not something we normally look into. Polling Rates measure the rate that data is sent from a peripheral to a computer, the higher the better. 1,000 Hz equates to about 1ms of latency, which is pretty much unnoticeable. The 8,000 Hz of the Corsair K70 RGB PRO is an eight-fold increase, reducing the latency all the way down to 0.25 Hz. It’s potentially overkill but when you factor in the excellent build quality and Cherry MX switches it delivers in the performance department. And then some.

Adjusting the Polling Rate, setting up profiles, RGB lighting, and more are handled via Corsair’s robust iCue software. Which, although weighs in at well over 1GB in terms of install size is as in-depth as they come - setting up macros and secondary functions is intuitive and easy to get a hang of.

Linear switches are great for gaming, which was only reinforced when playing DOOM Eternal, Apex Legends, and the latest Cyberpunk 2077 Edgerunners update with the Corsair K70 RGB PRO. Naturally, we didn’t come across any issues or any noticeable latency and switching things to Discord chat windows, emails, and other productivity tasks were seamless. Not to keep harping on the dedicated media keys, but once you get used to controlling music and media from your keyboard as you browse and do the messing around with apps and various windows dances - it’s hard to go back.

In the end, it’s hard to fault the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard. It might be a little pricey (though you can find it on sale for a lot less than the RRP mentioned above) for a wired keyboard, but everything from the build to the keycaps, switches, and extended features is premium. We’d be nitpicking to say that maybe the on-screen display could be more of an animated display, but that’s not a reason to look past this brilliant keyboard.
