October 2022 for games is actually pretty big, but that’s to be expected for the traditional holiday onslaught of games that arrive this time of year. There are some large-in-name releases alongside some delayed debuts on some forgotten (at launch) platforms and, well, just a host of variety too. No Man’s Sky finally rocks Nintendo Switch, which is something of a technical feat.

The brilliant Switch JRPG, Triangle Strategy comes to PC and Sony continues its foray into letting the PC Master Race have at its exclusives with Sackboy: A Big Adventure and the arrival of a little series starring a relatively unknown here - Nathan Drake. As far as big FPS titles go, Blizzard is kicking things off with Overwatch 2 coming October 4, with Call of Duty capping the month off with Infinity Ward’s reimagining of Modern Warfare II.

Here’s what you can expect for October.

Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 is as much a reboot and refresh as it is a straight-up sequel to Blizzard’s popular team-based shooter. Not only does it feature revamped and remastered content from the original game alongside new maps, modes, and heroes, but it replaces the original with a shift to a new 5v5 formula. Plus, it’s going free-to-play too, which means no more loot boxes and the arrival of the Seasonal Battle Pass system. Blizzard is planning to support the game in a huge way, with 2023 set to bring PvE content to the game.

NieR: Automata: The End of YoRHa Edition

The first of two unlikely releases coming to the Nintendo Switch, and we say unlikely because NieR: Automata’s initial release was quite a while ago. This is one of those games that has become a modern pop culture classic, with everything from its art direction, costume design, and music growing in popularity. And the Nintendo Switch port is shaping up to be an impressive one with all manner of DLC content included.

No Man’s Sky

What do we really need to say other than the procedural space exploration hit, No Man’s Sky, is now on Nintendo Switch. Releasing as a single-player-only game on Nintendo’s platform, No Man’s Sky Nintendo Switch still features over six years of content drops, updates and more, and will continue to be supported despite being a standalone platform release of the game.

No More Heroes 3

First released on the Nintendo Switch a couple of years back, No More Heroes 3 was the unlikely but very welcome sequel to one of the strangest action game series from the Nintendo Wii era. With the game coming to PC and console, expect improved visuals, performance, 4K support, and the same over-the-top action.

An argument could be made, quite funnily, about privilege and access when you’re talking about a golf game, given it is considered a rich person’s game. And with 2K opting to split the release of its heightened editions over its standard ones, it’d be a pretty good little divot. But then, if you’re willing to pony up, why shouldn’t you get earlier access. This is a free market, after all. So, with that said, this new entry in the more recently-retitled PGA Tour 2K series, comes with Tiger Woods, Course Designer and other bells and whistles and is the premier golf title on the market.

Triangle Strategy

Square Enix’s penchant for poor naming of its many, many JRPGs continues with Triangle Strategy, though what also continues is that it’s very, very good. A tactical RPG at heart, the game pokes fun at itself often and is something of a cult hit now among the Nintendophiles of the world and something worth checking out. Just be ready for all the cheese a classic JRPG experience and you’ll be fine.

WRC Generations

The rally genre is an interesting one. On the one hand you have the purist entries. The ones where messing up a gear change can be the end of your stage. On the other? Well, you have gymkhana, drifting, mud spray -- the works! So where does WRC Generations fit into this? It’s a mix of the two, but a heavier lean on the first. Largely because it includes most of the 2022 season as well as situating itself in the Frozen North.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers

Continuing to not ferment after its Use-By date, Dragon Ball is poised to welcome another new addition to its midst (not unlike the show), by way of Dragon Ball: Breakers -- a game that looks less like a Boss Rush and more like a Boss Flee. Billed as an “asymmetrical action game”, Dragon Ball: Breakers pits seven ‘ordinary’ citizens against the menacing Frieza. What’s not to love?

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Sequel to a team-favourite here at AusGamers, A Plague Tale: Innocence, sees our hapless heroes Amicia and Hugo attempting to outrun the Black Death that took centre stage in A Plague Tale: Requiem, while also trying to cure Hugo of his ‘powers’. The same grim and desperate vibe of the first outing still exists here, only the player is now armed with more recourse to approach conflict in different ways, adding a layer to tactical thinking that goes alongside a new visual sheen, an even deeper story and a journey for the (Dark) ages.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

An asymmetrical multiplayer game set in the Ghostbusters universe that draws on nostalgia and imagery from the iconic 1980s supernatural comedy. Ghostbusters and videogames have a somewhat spotty track-record, with some great games mixed with some not-so-great. Here’s hoping this one falls into the former category.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

October 19 marks the date that Sony and Naughty Dog’s flagship Uncharted series finally shares its particular cinematic brand of action-adventure on a platform that isn’t a PlayStation console. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection features both Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and will arrive with a bunch of PC-specific features. Like support for ultra-wide displays (very cool), uncapped frame-rates, multiple resolution options including 4K, and the ability to tweak settings like Texture and Model Quality, Anisotropic Filtering, Shadows, Reflections, and Ambient Occlusion.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

Rabbids, for the first time in their history, will talk in Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. And it’s… weird. It doesn’t make the game any less enjoyable though, with this new entry in the series freeing up the player-characters from traditional tactics grids into a more fluid movement zone. It’s just one of a number of things that separate this new entry from Kingdom Battle and Donkey Kong Adventure, all of which look set to elevate the game and experience even more.

Gotham Knights

Even though we don’t fully buy the synopsis that in this version of Gotham City, Batman is dead - we’ll run with it for now. An offshoot of the Arkham games, Gotham Knights is a co-op action RPG with combat that looks to build on the freestyle combo action that sat at the heart of the Arkham trilogy. Instead of The Bat, you take control of either Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, or Red Hood, to take on the Court of Owls - a secret society as old as the city itself.

New Tales from the Borderlands

When Telltale released the episodic Tales from the Borderlands back in the day, it shed new light on Gearbox’s cartoonish, post-apocalyptic, and violent action-RPG meets shooter. Namely, in the story and character department. With Gearbox taking the development lead on New Tales from the Borderlands, it’s a spiritual successor in every sense of the term, with a focus on story, narrative choices, and getting to know a brand-new cast of characters looking to making it in the Borderlands universe.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Another formerly PlayStation exclusive is making the jump to PC; this time, it’s the fun and vibrant platformer Sackboy: A Big Adventure. This one supports co-op with up to four players in the same room, which is rare and always great to see. For PC gamers there’s ultrawide support coming alongside up to 4K 120 fps and NVIDIA DLSS2 super-resolution.

The long-awaited next entry in the over-the-top Bayonetta series is finally ready to make its full debut, with the Nintendo Switch exclusive arriving on October 28. This one was first revealed several years ago, so Platinum Games has been slow-cooking this for some time now. But, if the latest trailer is anything to go by, fans of the series and over-the-top action aficionados alike are going to be in for a treat.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

A reimagining of the AAA beast that was 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, this new entry from series creators, Infinity Ward, is actually a follow-up to the studio’s reimagining of Modern Warfare. Running off an internal engine that will drive all CoD games for the foreseeable future and updating its multiplayer offering alongside new Warzone content, this is the biggest game release of the month, if not the year.
