As you know I am one of those underlying conditions statistic bros, and this sort of s*** is part of how we get yeeted into the void.

It turns out that a medication I am taking is a really bad idea to eat during an infectious disease pandemic! This fact was missed by at least 10+ healthcare professionals from pharmacy through GP, nursing and 'virtual hospital' care after I came down with the spicy cough Friday a week back. I called an ambulance on Wednesday when I realised I was in deep s***. I am upright and home again now after being in critical care for a few days.

We're old people now. A lot of you will have friends or relatives who have type 2 diabetes. Empagliflozin/linagliptin (Glyxambi) can cause a life-threatening medical emergency called DKA if taken while infected with COVID-19. Worse, this may not result in high/low blood sugar so it masks the true cause of symptoms. I thought I was struggling with the varus when my medicine was killing me.

The medication in question is a part of a maintenance schedule rather than acute care. It can (and should) be ceased during any serious infection.

Goddamn dude that sucks. Glad you're on the mend; hope you avoid any further complications. F*** this virus (and the casual apathy people have to trying to avoid giving it to others).

no good hoggy!

im pretty fit and healthy (broken body parts aside), was double vaxxed and got absolutely floored by the spicy cough.

could barely move from the couch for a few days thought i was feeling better, tried to walk the dog and struggled to get home, no breath, no energy.

then 2 or 3 weeks of dry nasty cough and probably 6 to 8 weeks of severely depleated energy.

That was how I felt too Spook! Just a bit more die-y I guess? For the record I was double boosted (4 full doses of Pfizer). Also cheers trog for well wishes.

Stupid virus, and shame on Karen the other day rolling her eyes at my kid in the IGA for wearing his mask as he comes out of ISO (to protect others, we all got it) as he is supposed to.

Crazy how 'I just want my freedumz' turned so quickly into 'everyone has to take off their f*****g masks now'. Maybe just a personal anecdote North QLD thingy, hope so anyway.

Wife and I got it more or less at the same time and it floored her. She'd had Astra as her first two jabs, while I had the Paul Pfeiffer. She definitely copped it worse but I had a seriously chest infection-like experience. And while the flu-like stuff was only four-ish days for me and seven-ish for her, what we weren't ready for was old "COVID brain" which lingered for close to a month; forgetfulness, staring off into the void, straight-up absent mindedness, clumsy functions.

Glad you're on the mend though Hoggy, scary stuff indeed.

I know it's only a matter of time but I'm trying my best to avoid catching it. I'm boosted vax but I don't want any of these nasty ongoing effects!

Yeh rrrocket, that was my plan.

Very hard to avoid infection with school aged kids, and once it was in the house I couldn't avoid it (despite isolating, masking and partitioning the house etc).

They are not f*****g around when they claim its super contagious!

I just bought a HEPA air filter for the home - mostly for non-COVID reasons (our flat doesn't have great airflow and when we cook smells linger for EVER), but the evidence seems pretty good that they provide some additional benefit for virus filtering so hoping it will generally help for keeping people healthier.

I know right, and it's crazy how we're basically doing nothing about it other than some half-assed posturing to masks

I read this story a while back about how a bunch of concerned parents kept Omicron out of a school through doing some science and getting some air filters. I can't figure out why every f*****g school in the country doesn't have an air purifier in every single classroom. The cost of it would be nothing compared to the cost of all these kids bringing it home.

It is truly mind boggling to me that someone gets double boosted and still complains that kids aren't being masked up. What a society we live in in 2022.

I too prefer my immune system to by artificial simulation. Seriously, it's far safer, we are only learning about med term effects of covid. The things we will learn in 5+, 10+ years.

I'm still masked at work, on the train and the shops. I don't care, I am not getting this virus.

Not looking to start beef, just to share my exp & potentially reduce fear from ppl that haven't had it yet...

Wife & I got the 'vid, both of us not jabbed but otherwise healthy. I was bed-ridden for 2 days, spent a 3rd on the coach & then was back working (remotely) on day 4. I needed a power nap around midday for the first few days back but back to full speed within 10 days.

The wife bounced back within 24 hours & was back in the gym day 8 (after iso) at full strength.

It's super random how it affects different people & I don't know if we'll ever see any clear, quantifiable data on why some copped it rougher than others

Good news! Some amazing research has been done into why there's such variability of disease presentation
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-01202-8
https://www.uptodate.com/contents/covid-19-clinical-features

the tldr is:

- There are differences between the sexes, women have a better immune response to covid/vaccination
- Age differences, older individuals produce a weaker immune response to viral infections
- Co-morbidities, such as immunodeficiencies can lead to worsened outcomes
- Socioeconomic background, the less money you have to spend on health the worse the covid outcomes

You and your wife had a classic disease presentation to covid. If you had been vaccinated your recovery period might have been reduced but the number one improvement would have been the probability of infecting others, it would have been reduced substantially.

Anyway, now that you've been infected you're essentially vaccinated.

You misunderstand, vaccination doesn't mean you will never get infected. It means you have immune memory against the virus and the above would apply (reduced disease, reduced transmission etc etc).

I understand that - I'm just noting that you saying "you've been infected you're essentially vaccinated" is the same as saying you're vaccinated - i.e. you have a limited window of greater immunity.

Just think it's important to clarify because there are a lot of people out there that (wrongly) assume that once they've had it once, they won't get it again.

Jesus hoggy, just catching up on this. Not cool at all.

I still mask up in public N95 and get funny looks but it's worth it. My daughter isn't vaxxed and my father is 72 and imuno compromised massively from 4 different cancers and multiple myeloma.

My entire family is very careful, essentially for dads sake, if dad caught it I don't think it'd end well.

Hope you are feeling better now mate.
