Let’s take a look at the big releases across each platform…
The year has been pretty stacked so far in terms of high-profile releases across all the major platforms. From Dying Light 2 to Horizon Forbidden West to Elden Ring to many more titles you’d put into that “must-play” category. So then, after all that movement we’ve seen so far, is April 2022 the breather we’ve been looking for? That is, the “Time Extension” needed to tackle all of Elden Ring’s daunting bosses. The bonus round to snag all of the sweet legendary loot in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.
The answer to that is, sure. With Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga probably being the most anticipated for the month. Covering all nine mainline Star Wars films with a loving eye towards detail, it’s also the biggest Lego game to date. If you’re a Star Wars fan then yeah, no rest for the
Let’s get to it. Here’s the breakdown of the new games coming in April 2022.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch
Release Date: April 5
Covering all nine films in the mainline Star Wars saga this is also the biggest Lego game to date, with more locations, stories, missions, playable characters, and fly-able and control-able vehicles than ever before. It’s actually a little daunting, but in retaining the comedic tone of past Lego games it also looks like something of a dream come true for Star Wars fans.
MLB The Show 22
Platform:PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch
Release Date: April 5
Baseball, it’s as American as ordering a meal and then being delivered a mountain of food on a serving platter. There are nine innings in total, two teams go to bat, and a pitcher throws the ball to try and get someone to excitedly yell “Strike!”. Hitting the ball out of the field is called a home-run because you, err, get to run home and tell your family the good news. You have become baseball. You know what bottom of the ninth means. MLB The Show 22 is out in April.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch
Release Date: April 7
A remaster of the classic RPG from 1999, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition sees the original PlayStation-era title get a proper and overdue HD makeover. With new artwork and redesigned character models to support the jump to a much higher resolution this is one that fans will definitely want to check out. Or, those looking to jump into a JRPG all-timer.
The House of the Dead: Remake
Platform: Switch
Release Date: April 7
Another blast from the past, this time the 1997 arcade hit from SEGA. As per its title The House of the Dead: Remake is a built from the ground-up remake sporting new visuals and revamped on-rails shooting action. Arriving on the Switch it will support motion controls for shooting which is cool. Though for those looking to recapture that classic arcade feel be sure to cordon off your TV with curtains.
Forgive Me Father
Platform: PC
Release Date: April 7
Forgive Me Father leaves Early Access on April 7, and if you haven’t jumped into this retro-style shooter be sure to watch the trailer above. The “Lovecraftian old-school FPS” meets animated comic book looks awesome. The action is fast-paced too, in a way that’s reminiscent of DOOM Eternal.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Platform: Switch
Release Date: April 20
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era Star Wars action-adventure from LucasArts that put you in the role of Darth Vader’s apprentice. Weirdly it’s getting a Switch remaster/release in April, which is nice but not, you know, entirely necessary. But, with classic Jedi Knight games and the brilliant Star Wars Episode I: Racer on the platform, it’s nice to see the Switch becoming a home for classic Star Wars games you can play on the go.
Chernobylite: Enhanced Edition
Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
Release Date: April 21
Released last year, Chernobylite quickly became one of our favourites for the year, “an unforgettable journey into the Exclusion Zone”. Its mix of survival, crafting, exploration, and action and a choice-driven narrative proved to be something special and it’s getting a proper enhanced-for-next-gen edition in April. Taking advantage of PS5 and Xbox Series X hardware, this new version will also come packed with post-launch content and new improvements to the game.
MotoGP 22
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch
Release Date: April 21
The latest entry in the motorcycle racer arrives with several updates and improvements to bring its racing action closer to the real thing. Plus, the addition of split-screen. Motorcycle racing is something that hasn’t really been given the spotlight in recent years but this new entry is definitely something of a celebration as it features classic races and racers to tap into the sports long history.
Zombie Army 4: Dead War
Platform: Switch
Release Date: April 26
Another Switch port, this time the latest entry in the Zombie Army series, with the arrival of Zombie Army 4: Dead War from Rebellion. A Left 4 Dead-style co-op affair in the guise of B-movie, gory kills and racking up points blend with creepy zombie sharks and back from the grave Nazis.
Nintendo Switch Sports
Platform: Switch
Release Date: April 29
Wii Sports is back, a phrase we thought we’d never hear. On the account of motion controls and the Wii-craze from the mid to late 2000s slowly fading into the hazy mists of distant memory. With the return of fan favourites and some new sports no doubt this will be a hit for the Switch, and something of a multiplayer favourite for the year ahead.
