February 2022 was definitely stacked, what with the likes of Horizon Forbidden West, Dying Light 2 Stay Human and Elden Ring dropping in the space of a few weeks. Games that many of us have been waiting years to check out. So then, time for a break right? Put those game-weary feet up and continue with one or all of the above as March presents a bit of breathing room.

Well, it turns out that February 2022 was only the beginning - 2022 is basically New Game Plus in terms of big titles coming in thick and fast. March sees the arrival of the long-awaited Gran Turismo 7 and Ghostwire: Tokyo on PlayStation consoles, plus Grand Theft Auto V’s next-gen debut. Plus, the return of The Settlers on PC, Kirby sucking things up on the Switch, and a whole lot more.

A whole lot. Time to buckle in, here’s the breakdown of new games coming in March 2022.

Conan Chop Chop

Release Date: March 1

What started as an April Fool joke is now a for reals thing, with Conan Chop Chop presenting the sort of couch-co-op action that made Castle Crashers a hit back in the day. With development led by Adelaide studio Mighty Kingdom the blend of top-down action and rogue-lite repetition could be the sort of open-world-game-break we’re all craving right now.

ELEX II

Release Date: March 1

The sequel to the sci-fi action-RPG from the team behind the Gothic series of games. Elex II looks to improve on the original in every way, with changes to combat, progression, and how its open-world RPG is presented. Plus, there’s jetpacks now – which really, might be all you need to know.

Far: Changing Tides

Release Date: March 1

A sequel to indie outfit Okomotive’s brilliant debut Far: Lone Sails, and it sees the action shift from sand to water in a similarly sombre and emotive journey through a strange post-apocalyptic landscape. Something for fans of stylish puzzle-platformers.

Shadow Warrior 3

Release Date: March 1

Lo Wang returns in the long awaited third instalment in the modern reimagining of the classic Shadow Warrior series. And with the first two entries having a very different look and feel, this third game from Flying Wild Hog and Devolver Digital is no different. With its bright and vibrant visuals and DOOM Eternal-like speed, this has ‘classic FPS action’ written all over it.

Babylon's Fall

Release Date: March 3

This collaboration between PlatinumGames and Square Enix merges the high-fantasy setting of something like a Final Fantasy with the fast-based action-heavy combat that has made Platinum a household name for super fans of all things third-person hack-and-slash. With co-op and a Season of updates planned, this could be Platinum’s biggest game to date.

Gran Turismo 7

The realistic driving simulation of the Gran Turismo series should need no introduction, with the series first making its ground-breaking debut on the original PlayStation. Designed for both PS4 and PS5, this latest entry ramps up the realism and the focus on celebrating all things cars.

Triangle Strategy

Release Date: March 4

Tactical turn-based action for the Nintendo Switch in the vein of Ogre Battle and Fire Emblem. From it’s blend of 3D and 2D pixel art to the wonderful presentation, soundtrack, and grid-style battlegrounds, Triangle Strategy could be the perfect fit for the handheld side of the Switch.

Chocobo GP

With Mario Kart 8 getting its first dose of new content, colourful kart-style racing is back in a big way. Chocobo GP sees the Final Fantasy spin-off racer get a new entry for the first time since 1999. And with that there’ll be a whole suit of single-player and multiplayer options, including a 64-player online knockout tournament mode.

WWE 2K22

Release Date: March 11

2K’s last WWE was something of a let-down, so it’s great news to hear that WWE 2K22 could be the one to bring wrasslin’ games back in a big way. As per our recent hands-on preview it’s “a massive leap forward” for the series in terms of visuals, animation, presentation, and how it feels to suplex, bodyslam, and wear spandex jocks.

Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online

Release Date: March 15

Grand Theft Auto V first made its debut on the Xbox 360 and PS3 back in 2013, and since then has been updated for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Now, it's the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S’s turn. With the best selling game of all time getting improved visuals, 60fps performance, and a standalone and expanded GTA Online means many out there will be revisiting Los Santos in March.

Tunic

This Legend of Zelda-style isometric action-adventure has been in development for a number of years, and by a single person to boot. Alongside Cuphead this has seen a similar situation where it has been one of the most indie releases for several years in a row. And with Andrew Shouldice putting the final touches on Tunic, its release is finally around the corner.

The Settlers

Release Date: March 17

Ubisoft is bringing back the beloved sim in reboot form, with The Settlers debuting on PC this month. Sporting new visuals and a mix of old and new gameplay, the series’ now classic mix of city-building and real-time strategy returns after so long away that it definitely feel like a ‘coming home’ moment.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Release Date: March 18

Another Final Fantasy spin-off, this time a third-person action-RPG that has narrative ties to the very first game that debuted on the NES. Sporting the sort of cinematic presentation that has made the series so popular over the years, with engaging action akin to something like Nioh, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is definitely for fans and newcomers alike.

Syberia: The World Before

A new entry in the classic adventure game series from creator Benoît Sokal, Syberia: The World Before sports some truly impressive visuals born from beautiful art direction. With a story that takes place on the cusp of World War II as well as in the year 2004, this time-bending adventure launches on PC in March.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Release Date: March 25

The long-awaited Ghostwire: Tokyo from Tango Gameworks and Bethesda is the second PlayStation exclusive from the publisher (the first was last year’s excellent Deathloop), with an equally interesting setup. A supernatural tale set in modern-day Tokyo, a first-person action game where your hands are weapons, and an open-world cinematic adventure that has you exploring alleyways and rooftops.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Kirby goes post-apocalyptic in this new 3D platformer starring the master of the suck. Here the little pink puffball explores the ruins of an ancient city not unlike something you’d find on Earth, albeit with all of the vibrancy and cuteness of a Nintendo game.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

Release Date: March 25

A Borderlands that sees one of the most memorable bits of DLC from Borderlands 2 expanded into its own thing. The high-fantasy tabletop setting of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands still has the sci-fi inspired guns, but now it also has the big double-handed axes and magic and goblins and trolls.

Weird West

Release Date: March 31

Weird West elevates a subgenre of horror and the Wild West with magic and demons and whiskey, and nothing in that sentence is wrong. In fact, it’s all awesome. The game, best described as an “Immersive Sim”, features five playable characters across five connected vignettes. Each vignette playthrough affects the following one, meaning the game’s centrepiece is choice and consequence in what, at least on paper, sounds like one of the most ambitious titles of this nature in some time. Did we also mention it’s the Wild West with demons? Nuff said, really.
