At this stage
Splinter Cell is slowly becoming videogame legend as opposed to something of a regular thing from
Ubisoft. And as fans patiently wait for another entry into the popular spy franchise they can at least take comfort in the news that Sam Fisher is set to make his return to the screen. Albeit on
Netflix, in a new animated series currently in development.
According to
Variety ,
Ubisoft is partnering with Netflix on a new animated series based on the
Splinter Cell franchise. According to the report a two season 16 episode order has been agreed upon with Derek Kolstad serving as the executive producer. He’s the writer behind the popular
John Wick films.
The original Splinter Cell was released in 2002 as an
Xbox exclusive then later ported to
PS2,
PC,
GBA and
GameCube. That first entry was critically acclaimed and well received, and in the following years Ubisoft published five sequels -- which are all still playable on the Xbox One via ‘Backwards Compatibility’. The last release in the franchise was 2013's
Splinter Cell: Blacklist, though if you want to get technical (as is the Splinter Cell way), Sam Fisher is set to appear in the mobile title
Elite Squad releasing on August 27. Oh, and then there was his recent guest appearance in
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands.
With no news of a proper Splinter Cell sequel from Ubisoft during its recent E3-style event, stealth fans have had to look elsewhere for their
stealth fix. But, there was one bit of exciting news last month when the Italian voice actor for Sam Fisher revealed to
Multiplayer.it that we could be seeing a sequel as early as 2021.
As for the Netflix series so far all parties have declined to comment or provide specifics, so we’ll just have to lurk in the shadows and wait, silently, for the official reveal.
