The Fall of Star Craft 2, Is this true?

I'm having a game discussion debate "(this is part of my uni task)", with a few other friends who think the fall of SC2 as an esports is true, Im pretty sure this topic may have been discussed before, IGN has made an article post about this.

http://in.ign.com/starcraft-ii-legacy-of-the-void/90030/feature/the-rise-and-fall-of-starcraft-ii-as-an-esport

Primarily 2 of my mates have left SC2 because they think MOBA games has pretty much took their interest, and enjoy more of the multiplayer feature over there. But I personally want to hear from you guys, and what you think about SC and RTS possibly as a dying genre? I want to hear from ex-SC players or people who still play SC or anyone who would like to have a say to this. Or someone who watches Esports.

Don’t have to answer all, answer just the ones you have a strong opinion of. ;) These questions are just randoms to have an idea what I'm actually asking.

1. Would you agree that StarCraft 2 is falling in western countries?

2. Have MOBA games like League of Legends overtaken StarCraft 2 in popularity? Have players quit and moved to MOBA games? Would it be because they want to play a game that requires less strategy thinking?

3. Have many players quit StarCraft because it’s too hard?

4. Would you agree that the design and balancing decisions is what’s hurting StarCraft 2?

5. Does anyone here also experience long waiting times to get into matches these days? Yes or No, If yes, how long?

6. Is there any hope for future RTS games as it doesn’t make much cash as it used to?

7. (Question for those who knows a lot about ESports or watches it, I need help with your opinion in this)

Is the falling of western SC2 players due to the overwhelming dominance of Korean pro players? this relates to if SC2 is falling as an esports.

I feel this is quite an interesting discussion, I feel like there's no right or wrong answer, as it really depends on the person who experience playing SC. And that's who I'm really interested in hearing.

Thanks so much to hearing everyone voices in advance.

I can't really answer any of those questions. What I can say is that me and my mates have been playing Dota 2 almost exclusively for the last 4 years. Before that we played SC2 almost exclusively.

Some of my mates have started playing SC2 again (tho Dota 2 is still our go-to). I wanted to watch one of their games recently before deciding if I wanted to get back into it. I was stunned to discover I couldn't just spectate their game like I can with Dota. It seems super weird for a pro game like SC2 to not have what really by now is a standard pro feature.

I'll have a crack though:

1. No idea, but I don't play it any more
2. I think the presence of pro players anyway makes almost no difference to how many people play the game, because only the tiniest fraction of people play at a pro level
3. Yes. Yes. Yes. No.
4. No idea. Not me. I just enjoy the teamplay aspects of Dota more than I did in SC2. I only ever really enjoyed 4v4 SC2.
5. There is no 5.
6. No
7. Haven't played for a year or two but don't remember it being an issue
8. Yes

I finally got round to playing StarCraft 2 last year, just single player, loved it!

I do feel there's less awesome RTS games then there used to be, although perhaps I'm just not up on the latest ones.

I agree, I feel like RTS in general is falling as there hasnt really been any great ones out there. Starcraft is still the high profile RTS out there.

You could say MOBAs are simply the evolution, or the next gen of the RTS genre. Starcraft 2 (as great as it is) mechanics are based on the original RTS design that was pioneered way back in the early 90's by Westwood with Dune 2 and C&C.

Even by late 90's, the spam peons, mine resources, build barracks, push grunts design was a bit stale. Games usual devolved into a who's bigger army wins with a single epic battle. Then the winner would just clean out the scraps. Games like a Total Annihilation and Warcraft 3 tried to change the formula with special units which then spawned MOBA mods and the like.

So I don't RTS is dying, I think MOBAs are just the next gen of RTS games.

@bob

I never really thought it of that way, that's a really good point. Next gen of the RTS genre.

Yeah War3 was amazing. WoW really f***ed things up for the future of Warcraft RTS.

I have another question for you guys after having lots of answer from other forums as well. Now I want to focus primarily on Esports

I found that from most people that StarCraft is still alive and popular in the community, however it doesn’t seem to have much media coverage in competitions like Esports? And I’ve been hearing people saying MOBA games has taken over StarCraft in Esports because It's easier to see the individual skill of each player in a MOBA. Would you agree with this and do you believe SC can potentially return as a popular Esports competition (Assuming SC is falling in ESports) ? Or if no, why?

I think with eSports starting to make more of a push into mainstream, they're tending towards games that are easy for spectators to watch. I mean there's still a lot going on in a game of Overwatch or Dota, but at least the action is focused around a few heroes/players and it's pretty obvious to the spectator when one side has made a good play or won a fight. With starcraft, it's confusing as all hell to watch unless you play starcraft and know what's going on. I think it's just not as friendly to a casual spectator as other games are
