Email spam has dropped significally over the last ~10 years, I remember my gmail would have hundreds, now I'm lucky to get 20 junk emails. But I find now there's a new way to spam people, a much more annoying, never ending bulls*** you have to deal with. It's the god damn signup spam, you sign up and all of a sudden you're subscribed to 10 different email streams, with more added (and you're marked to receive it and have no say) everyday.

The worst I have experienced was couchsurfing.com followed by facebook. Couchsurfing was, I am not joking here, 10 emails within a week of signing up. I'm a habitual unsubscriber, any email I think is useless I click unsubscribe. But with couchsurfing I was constantly doing it until I finally logged in and unticked everything. This doesn't mean I won't receive any more emails because like facebook they can just add another category and wam bam I get another f*****g email.

There needs a "do not contact me" checkbox for all these sites.

Don't even get me started on the horrendous lightbox popup bulls*** that tries to get you to subscribe to their s***, even before you've had a chance to browse their website.

Wondering how long it will be until someone hides a nasty surprise in an unsubscribe link ??

gmail does an awesome job at hiding spam from me without doing anything anyway

The problem with marking things spam, is they're not spam per se, it's solicited because I signed up but unsolicited because I didn't get a chance to say Dont Email Me with your s***. So if I mark as spam, google may pickup other emails from that domain as spam and I would not get relevant emails. A really good example is paypal, they email you once a month with advertisement. There is no way to unscubscribe from this because it is under the guise of Monthly Statement. You mark that email as spam, you may missout on actual important paypal emails.

In regards to unsubscribe link, I actually think it works. For my work email, ever single time I've gotten advertisement for products I click unsubscribe and I never hear from them again.

I wish legitimate companies would stop spamming me with advertisement or "notifications".

I don't care about spam. What annoys me is the f*****g pop up boxes on web pages that ask if I want to get emails. That s*** is annoying. Who really reads newsletter type s*** on email these days.......It's not 1997 anymore.

I find GMails filters to give me a *lot* of false positives though. Mailinglists I actually want to see content from even after I've removed it from the spam filter will invariably end up there again a few weeks or months later.

I believe the data shows that emails are generally the most successful and/or cost-effective form of digital marketing in terms of response rates etc (more so than social media). That is why they are so aggressively trying to get your details.

This explains A LOT. I was thinking the same thing, why the f*** does this blog want my email so badly it will harass me instantly?
