Just a quick thread for anyone who likes harvest moon / rune factory.
This game is $15 on steam and it's amazing :) http://stardewvalley.net/ Done by one guy over 4 years. Originally, he had planned to release MP on launch, but it was taking too long. So he did the SP release on the 26th and MP is being worked on over the next few months. A modding API has just recently been released with some great mods popping up (for ex - freezing time while inside). On top of that, I also found out that it will eventually have steam workshop support, so mods will be even easier! Some video: I've only gotten about 3 hours into it so far, but there's SOOOO much to do! There's a 100+ level mine / dungeon you can fight your way into, crafting, animals, marriage and kids (apparently they help out on the farm), town upgrades etc. The only real con I've found so far is that the combat is rather simplistic (hit button to swing). Still, everything else is right on point. |
8 hours in and it's still like crack...

I remember playing this on an emulator with my sisters and we seriously enjoyed the game but after a while it seemed ridiculous how much you needed to do an upgrade on your property. So I gave up. Also, harvesting was f*****g boring, I'd always run out of time and when I built a greenhouse I ran out of energy. Have they solved this?
What's the end game like? Or what's the progression like? Graphics are pixellated s*** which annoys me but whatver |

Also, harvesting was f*****g boring, I'd always run out of time and when I built a greenhouse I ran out of energy. Have they solved this? I guess it depends on your outlook going into the game. If you're expecting "end game" to be anything besides finishing the main quest, side missions for the town folk, achievements and more farming, then the game isn't going to keep you for too long. It's more of a "enjoy the journey", chillax type of game. You can play forever, but the story only goes for the first 2 years from what I'm told. Additions to the farm are expensive, but not prohibitively. I feel like I've earned something when I finally manage to scrape the bits and pieces needed for it. You have levels for each profession and each prof get's a "trait" at level 5 that changes how you play a little (can help determine your farms focus, for ex choose to either get more cash for crops or get more cash for animal products) Graphics are pixel art because one dude made the game and he's not an artist :P |
What about the actual farming? Can you get helpers to do some of the chores, so you're not stuck doing the same s*** every day. I didn't mind this at the start when you had 1 chicken and crops but later on it got a bit too much. I guess multiplayer would be really cool because you could have a massive farm with multiple working on it. But I bet it's going to be the usual s*** of each person has a farm and you can trade or something along those lines?

I haven't gotten that far, but apparently your missus helps out when you finally select a partner. But otherwise, it's mostly the same, though there are sprinklers so you can skip watering ;) |
Your partner can help you out when you get married + there are sprinklers for auto-watering :)

Hey look game discussion.
Need a filler game in-between LoL sessions so may as well get this. Time sink ahoy! |
Hey look game discussion. Trouble is you'll probably end up playing LoL in-between Stardew Valley sessions :P |
I fear that as well. Time to test out the theory!

Just to update, there's a new mod API and mods popping up on the game's forums.
I've installed "More music" , inventory items show sell price in the tooltip and one that freezes time when you're inside (mine can be toggled on or off, but the default setting for it is the same as vanilla) Will likely be a TON more coming down the line, the API has only been out for a little while. Also, a shoutout to the anime-styled singles portraits mod. ::EDIT:: Forgot to mention the "fences don't break" mod I'm running too, can finally build a wood fence! |
