Hi all, I've just moved to Australia from the UK and thus had to leave my PC behind so I'm looking at acquiring a gaming laptop. |

in case it's not... I have an MSI laptop that I gamed on in the past, it's alright but only uses one heat pipe for the video and CPU and everything runs hot. CPU reaches 100 degrees celsius. Spec for spec it's still not as fast as a regular PC (they never are) |

Is it just me or does $2199.00 seem expensive for a 15" laptop? Although I hate gaming on them so I wouldn't know whats good or not.
EDIT: Twas just looking around and apparently it's not. Still, bugger playing games on a 15" screen. |

I'm pretty sure you can get a 15" MBP for less money than that Rev.
(The 'tarted up' nVidia GPU specc'd model with the 'retina' display too). |

Is it just me or does $2199.00 seem expensive for a 15" laptop? Although I hate gaming on them so I wouldn't know whats good or not. It's never the size of the screen that makes a laptop expensive, it's the video card. You can get large screen laptops for cheap as chips that use rubbish chipsets that barely run windows. Getting a laptop with a GPU and CPU capable of running games is what costs the big bux. |

I'm just in a bit of a luck it's a bit of a ball ache to ship my PC over but then I'm thinking I may do eventually in like a year for example so I don't want to buy a new PC, hence looking for the right gaming laptop. |

First off, I'm going to give you a bit of advice gathered from close friends and relatives (and even personal exp) about gaming on laptops:
Simply don't. It will NEVER even be a fraction as good as a dedicated rig of the same price. Also, chances are it'll overheat very easily. Then the battery will die in about 10 minutes on "gaming mode" so there's no point bringing it out with you. Plus it's hard to game on a bus. Only place I was ever able to get a gaming sesh in was the Uni library, but the wireless mouse I was using had too much lag to play FPS's. Really, it's just better in almost every way to buy a tower for gaming instead. If you want to game on the move, buy a 3DS XL and put the rest of your budget towards a good $1600 gaming PC |

As Whirl said. Only get a laptop if you're actually going mobile. (You can also build a pretty bulls*** Mini-ITX rig as well and carry that to LAN parties if thats your bag)
A tower at the same price will be close to twice as powerful, with bigger screen, more comfortable keyboard, no trackpad, nowhere near as upgradeable, etc etc. Think carefully about this part. |

I've given up on gaming laptops...
I wanted something to get the job done while I was away with work and it's never worked out to my satisfaction. I should have just carted a console around with me everywhere I went, though I needed an OS environment that allowed me to do work too :/ price vs pleasure vs functionality yet again. |

Throw $500 on a good 120/144hz 27 inch monitor and put the rest into an SLi rig with an i7 and 8gb of RAM and you should be golden. Or you can go AMD and get a couple of 7990's for serious overkill (though quad XFire apparently doesn't scale that well). Personally, I dropped about $1200 AUD on my PC and it's scored in the top 5% of benchmarks globally. That was just for the tower, though. You could put more into it and still keep under $2000 and have a stellar rig. Hell, you could even get PC Case Gear to build it for you (I think they offer the service for $100 extra on any PC you build custom) and still make it under $2000. |

Damn, what is it with broken PCCG links lately. (I can confirm link is correct and doesn't get modified by the site, it happened to me yesterday and an edit + double check yielded nothing, but copying the URL from the browser then pasting into a new tab also works fine)
Suggestion to try turning link into a bit.ly or tinyurl for now, cheers. |

Yeah that's a good mix of parts. On the side, perhaps see if you can get the 2GB card turned into a 4GB card for cheap. Just means if you add a second card in the future, you won't be held back by limited amounts of VRAM.
That's just the box too, add a screen, kb, mouse, speakers/headphones (unless you have it all). |

Bevan, the 120GB SSD is going to be a pain if you're looking to install your games on a SSD. For MMORPGs I recommend it - although they love to eat up a lot of space. I'd suggest getting them to build something custom for you, with at least a 250GB SSD (It's only $80 over the 120GB version anyway). For MMORPGs you'll be fine with any standard 1080p screen - you don't *need* 120Hz or anything like that, save your money unless you want to get a premium monitor. |

I was looking at the 770 system myself. It should have more than enough grunt (esp when compared to a laptop).
As net and ph33x have suggested, the two big changes I'd make is 240/256gb SSD (or 512 if you can afford it) and the 4GB 770. Slap another $500 down on one of the 120/144hz monitors and grab a cheapie keyboard and a decent mouse and you'll be set. Will still be well under budget and should hold out for a long while. |

It's a real computer that you have control over. You, and you alone are responsible for how the thing runs. You, and you alone... so help me Trog. Hmmm actually previous champs here at Qgl/AG aren't so good at hardware anymore. Take a look around in your general area for half decent PC repair places. I went to lan games at my brothers house, we played some fun games made even more fun by the fact I didn't have to lug a big heavy s***box around with me. Sure lans are dying because of super fast internet but if you do like to get together for a bash and play some real games (old ones with dedicated servers, none of this battlefield / call of duty bulls*** that requires the internet for lan play) then gaming on a laptop is "handy" Sure it's not as good as a real pc but if you're the kind of person who sits there with the game on ultra and stares at how pretty it is, you're not gaming, you're a bloody poser. Lowest detail possible, highest fps possible, kain the s*** out of everyone or go home and sook to mummy. |

What a load of balls. Or you could turn everything up to ultra AND STILL get the highest possible fps... Why compromise? Anyway, lappys are ok for occasional bashes, but again, constant use will see them overheating. Unless you're homeless or travelling, a tower is always a better buy than a laptop. |

so we're in the same boat. I've given it a lot of thought and decided that I need a gaming laptop. I've been eyeing these toshiba laptops
I kinda like the Qosmio but will definitely need to look up some more models. what I'd really like to know for now is whether toshibas are reliable or not? never bought anything toshiba in my life. |
